How Do I Block 2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4056892)?

KB4056892 is Awaiting restart

Unfortunately, when I did a restart it bricked my system. I had a large windows logo on the screen and it just sat there.  I rebooted and was able to trigger a repair.  The repair said it was backing out the last update as it would not be completely installed.

With KB4056892 is Awaiting restart I did another restart and had the same problem.  At the end I was staring at a Windows logo that just sat there.

Again I triggered a repair and the system is now usable.  However, Windows Update still says: KB4056892 is Awaiting restart

How do I block it so it doesn't get installed if I have to reboot the machine?

    To stop the installation of KB4056892, I was able to catch the installation while its percentage was still increasing - that is, before it requested a restart.  Fortunately, I was able to start by applying a backup of Windows that was captured at a time before the start of the installation. I tried several iterations of trying to catch it until I succeeded. 

    As for the discrepancies in the list of pending installations, I do not have an answer for you. It must be a Microsoft "secret". After you informed me of the differences, I checked my own list and also noticed differences. After I manually checked for updates, one of the items in the list (Defender) appeared, installed and then "disappeared".  The other items are still under the radar and have not installed yet. It may be that these items are being listed for download, but have not been acquired. Obviously, this is just a guess and not very useful.

    Ive got one bricked AMD running 7. Stuck on login screen, reimaged and now it won't POST. Another Win 10 machine With an Intel chip is attempting a system restore.

    If you do not have a backup to revert to a previous instance of Windows, see if you have a Restore Point. It is possible to boot Windows 10 in recovery mode and direct it to a Restore Point, if one exists. Then you can attempt to revert Windows to a previous working version. Don't count on the Restore Point being available very long. I have found that regardless of the space I reserved for Restore Points, Windows tends to dump almost every one at most inconvenient times. 

    Restore Points are managed by running C:\Windows\System32\SystemPropertiesProtection.exe

    This is a win 7 amd box. Since reinstalling it will not post, just restarts every 3 seconds or so. Cannot even access setup. This began with it locking on the windows startup screen. Reinstalled its bricked.
