How Do I Block 2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4056892)?

KB4056892 is Awaiting restart

Unfortunately, when I did a restart it bricked my system. I had a large windows logo on the screen and it just sat there.  I rebooted and was able to trigger a repair.  The repair said it was backing out the last update as it would not be completely installed.

With KB4056892 is Awaiting restart I did another restart and had the same problem.  At the end I was staring at a Windows logo that just sat there.

Again I triggered a repair and the system is now usable.  However, Windows Update still says: KB4056892 is Awaiting restart

How do I block it so it doesn't get installed if I have to reboot the machine?

    Bill Gates no longer works at Microsoft.

    The current Chief Executive Officer is Satya Nadella and is nowhere near the richest man in the world.

    Mr. Gates retired from Microsoft in 2008 and was succeeded by Steve Ballmer who, himself, retired in 2014 when Mr. Nadella took over.

    Much better. Now im happy about them killing the bios of my pc with a crappy, nontested software update. You are right, they didnt used to be horrible...

    I am not trying to shift anything. All manufacturers are informed well ahead of time by Microsoft when changes and updates in the O/S are being made so they can make their devices compatible. Since two out of the major three managed to do that and one chose not to...where would any sane person put the responsibility?

    Technology continues to change and grow at amazing speeds and those who manufacture the hardware that make OUR devices run need to stay up to date. That's just a given.

    Computer Manufacturers do (that's why HP and others released firmware updates for their Motherboards a month in advance of the Fall Update) and Processor Manufacturers do also. Which is why ARM and Intel managed to have updates out that made their devices compatible with the January Patch.

    If users don't remember the basic lessons about computers:

    Always back up important information to a safe place.

    Always keep the system up to date (that includes your firmware: motherboard, processors, internet devices as well AS all Third Party Software and your Operating System.

    Then we can expect issues,

    Those are basic. And we who own and operate computers have that responsibility.

    Just like those who make the hardware and software have the obligation to release updates and patches in a timely manner.

    The majority do.

    Microsoft makes Windows 10. It's fine.

    Works great.

    It was not crappy nor was it non-tested.

    It's all working fine on my computer.

    I fully realize that AMD users have issues but that is AMD's doing.

    And not the first time, either.
