How Do I Block 2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4056892)?

KB4056892 is Awaiting restart

Unfortunately, when I did a restart it bricked my system. I had a large windows logo on the screen and it just sat there.  I rebooted and was able to trigger a repair.  The repair said it was backing out the last update as it would not be completely installed.

With KB4056892 is Awaiting restart I did another restart and had the same problem.  At the end I was staring at a Windows logo that just sat there.

Again I triggered a repair and the system is now usable.  However, Windows Update still says: KB4056892 is Awaiting restart

How do I block it so it doesn't get installed if I have to reboot the machine?

    Had the same problems , finally fix it by going to settings , Update & Security , View installed update history , uninstall updates ... from there click on the update and then uninstall , wait for it to finish the uninstall and then reboot , then as soon as the system is rebooted run this http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab

     the update should be on the top of the list , then hide the update ... all done

    Microsoft have now fully removed KB4056892 from their server. I ran the MediaCreationTool confirming the blocked update no longer existed on my system.

    You can all now rest with the knowledge your system boot will no longer 'hang' on startup.

    OK.  I paused Windows Updates but KB4056892 was still pending restart.

    Left the machine alone for a day and when I checked it today Windows Update said the machine was up to date.  Last checked 11:42 PM yesterday and  KB4056892 was gone.  Hide/show does not see it as hidden or as available.

    Now the question is: Is it safe to go back in the water and unpause Windows Update?

    Because I have a memory capacity that was developed before the Internet was born I am reminded of an amusing episode with a Compaq Presario and XP's Service Pack 3 that occurred back in 2010.

    AMD really hasn't changed much. Which is probably why HP now uses Intel in their devices.

    It should be noted that this problem only affects users with AMD processors because AMD (unlike ARM and INTEL) are still in denial about SPECTRE's ability to target them.

    Yes, they are immune to Meltdown (or so it appears) so they are refusing to do anything to update their drivers until their users start getting whacked by SPECTRE.

    Figures.

    Meanwhile those of us with ARM or INTEL are patched.

    Such is life.
