Print job goes into queue and instantly disappears with nothing being printed

For some reason my system has stopped working correctly with one of my printers. The system sees the printer as being connected and available and when I print the job goes to the print queue. However it then instantly disappears and nothing is printed. Can someone advise?

The printer with the problem is an Epson Stylus Photo 1290. The printer was working a couple of days ago and the only thing I can think that has happened is that there was an automatic windows update.

I am running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version 15063.726

I have tried: starting and stopping the print spooler, uninstalling the driver, running the trouble shooter, rebooting ...

Any help welcome.

Thanks,

Chris.

Note: 28/11/2017 - I have had an email from Epson who confirm the problem is caused by a change introduced by Microsoft. As a result they have no fix for the problem and say that if I wish to continue using the latest version of Windows 10 then I need to buy a new printer or wait for Microsoft to introduce a change (which may never happen). This is hugely disappointing and is also not very environmentally friendly.

Based on your post on printing, I think that the Microsoft Virtual Agent can help you troubleshoot your issue. It'll walk you through the right troubleshooting steps based on the specific problem you're facing.

Please let us know if this solved your issue.

For printers connected to your computer via wireless, this almost certainly is caused by the printer having been assigned a new IP address by your router's DHCP server. Unfortunately, as near as I can determine, the Stylus Photo 1290 does not have wifi capability, so your problem is a bit more difficult.

Is the printer connected directly to the computer by USB; connected to a USB hub; or connected to another computer and shared over your local network?

Assuming the most common configuration, that your printer is connected directly to the computer by USB, I suggest completely uninstalling the printer and reinstalling. When you do reinstall, use a different USB port, if possible.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

The printer is connected by USB. No driver for the printer appears in the uninstall or change a program lists. However via Device Manager I uninstalled the printer and checked the option to remove the driver. I plugged the printer into a different USB port and powered it on. The PC instantly recognised it and a driver was installed. Unfortunately when I try to print the problem remains - a job goes onto the queue and off again in the blink of an eye with nothing appearing on the printer.

As an experiment I installed the printer on another PC and tried to print to over a network. The same problem occurred. I saw the job arrive in the print queue, on the PC with the printer attached to it, disappear from the queue and nothing print out. I also tried connecting the printer directly to another PC running Windows 10 and the same problem now occurs.

When I use the maintenance software available in the Printer Preferences dialog box I can print a 'Nozzle Check' - the job goes into the queue and prints successfully. When I try and print from any application I have the problem described above.

As I mentioned when initially logging the problem - subjectively, this seems to have become a problem after a recent automatic update of windows. Coincidence? Maybe. Both PCs have had a recent automatic windows update.

    Any other suggestions welcome.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Hi - I would appreciate a response from Microsoft on this as the evidence is pointing toward the problem arising after the most recent automatic update.

I cannot use my colour printer on any machine which has had the recent update.

    Thanks.

    Hi Chris,

For us to make sure where we're having the issue, can you consider connecting your printer on a PC that is not updated yet like your current PC?

This way, we can make sure that your idea having the latest Windows update started the issue.

We'll be waiting for your response.

    Regards.
