Yes....i would like to know.   Also....how do i find the version of wmp in my computer.  I went into properties, details and it just says "windows media player", the it says its a "shortcut" file.  What does that mean?

A 'Shortcut' is, well, a shortcut. It is a small file that allows you to click on an Icon to start a Program, such as Windows Media Player. If you add an Icon to the Desktop, there is a small file that tells the computer to translate a click on that Icon to mean to run the Executable File (file with a .exe extension) that starts WMP. It is not the file that starts the program, it is the file that starts the file that starts the program. Another "behind the scenes" thing we don't really use or need to know about.

How to find your version of Windows Media Player: This works to find the version of any program you have. I do not what your View settings are in WMP, but you should have File, View, Play, Tools and Help across the top left of the screen. Click on Help.

At the bottom of the Pop-Up window, click on About Windows Media Player.

The window above shows that this WMP is Version 12.

Now - pop quiz - just so that we can be on the same page: What is the difference between a File and a Folder?

Well Cyber................I'll give this a go.  Files store data and the folders organize those files, right?

I was looking at wmp players from my start list.  I will go into it to find my version.  I beleive that I have 12.

Can you give me an honest opinion.  Is windows 10 with just release update better than windows 7?  Of course they say its the latest software, but my laptop has windows 10 and its a pain.  Have they made some good changes to it?  I would like to upgrade my desktop, but hesitate.

You had me going when I said 'files' and you said, "No! Not songs." Each song is a separate music file. When a CD is ripped, WMP usually makes a Folder with the Album name as the name of the Folder, and the Files in the Folder are the songs.

If I understand this, in Windows Explorer, you navigated to C:\Users\Username\Music. That is where I get lost... The only way that I know to organize music there is to move it in to other Folders. I have some tricks that I use, but I am very curious to learn what you did.

Computer files are 'typed' by what they do.  Types of files would be, say, word files, picture files, executable files, audio files, etc.

The filename is, well, the name of the file. Without the file name, Windows cannot find or do anything with the file. I confess that I get a bit lost when you say that files are under files...

I am at a loss trying to think of where and how you added labels like country, 80's.

I hope that you know that Ric and I are just regular Users, just like you. We just try to pass along what we know.

I too have a Win 7 Desktop and a Win 10 Laptop. I think that my wife wanted me to have the Win 10 because her online banking has all gone to Win 10 and she wanted to have someone handy who could walk her through the vagaries of Win 10.

I am loathe to update an old computer to a new Operating System. I am going to limp along with the Win 7 machine until it croaks. It is just my personal prejudice, but everyone that I know who tried to upgrade an old machine to a new Windows has had problems. It is just me, but for all the headaches of turning a Win 7 machine in to a Win 10 machine, I would just as soon have new machine with Win 10 already installed.

Hi again - after a good night's sleep! - I agree! Don't upgrade the W7 PC - I've 'mothballed' mine and taken it offline - I reset it to factory settings and it no longer updates so I can run the original programs (such as WMP 12) and other W7 compatible software without the concern of security issues etc. It's a useful option to have. I have found W10 to be very reliable so I'm sorry you had difficulties with it. However as Cyber said - WMP is indeed a bit of a dinosaur and does not work so well which is why I have turned it off permanently. Groove Music seems to be better than when it first arrived so I can use that although you cannot rip or burn discs - but MS presumed the world was moving on from disc technology!

I mainly use streaming now - I have a Spotify Premium account (Amazon does something similar) which for the equivalent cost of a mid-price CD per month gives me access to all the music I could ever need on any device - you can download favourites for offline play too - although they cannot be copied to disc etc.

Amazon also has a music player you can install - have you tried that? My main issue with it (this was a good while back - it may have improved) was its tendency to muddle up albums with a similar name - e.g.

'Greatest Hits' - you'd get all the Tr1s and Tr2s mixed/mucked in together in album view. However it played OK and looked pretty good!
