track numbers in front of song names in windows music library, windows 7

I wanted to upgrade to w10 but was afraid to cause i heard so many bugs on it.  Now...ita almost outdated, so will wait to see whats next.  Ric....w7 library isn,t what duplicated the songs, it was wmp.  Its frustrating for the lamen person as myself that doesn,t have in deepth knowledge of computers.  Its getting to the point where everyone should take in depth classes just to be able to run software these days.   So......with that in mind, i,ll get back to you.  Oh...and....wmp seems to play all my music no matter where it comes from.  So??????    Talk later

That's fine - I'm in the North West - (hence the nw in the user name) although originally from London - it's a mixture of cloud/sunshine at the moment - cold but no ice or snow (right now at least) so not too bad.

Music- wise.... Main thing is not where it is (or was) but whether it will actually play from WMP. Moving stuff around can cause issues in W7 - the library system has been 'rationalized' in W10 so it's a bit easier to work with...

Oddly enough - you saying about Apple - iTunes is my main player but only by happenstance... I bought a streaming amp a few years back that I subsequently discovered worked best with 'Airplay' and by chance my kids bought me an iPad for my birthday at around the same time... so I suddenly needed iTunes, having never used it before. It actually works very well with my set-up. On the whole I prefer to keep third-party items to a minimum so that's the one big exception.

I don't use itunes.  I can't stand apple.  Anyway, as far as external drive........give me some examples.  Does a flash drive fit that senerio?  This is what I do:  I will buy music from amazon, or I will copy from cd"s (not much of that though), and they automatically went into wmp.  However, recently I copied all my music onto flash drives and then sometimes I would go backinto flash and play songs just to make sure they were right.  I have several files in my windows library and I have moved things around under each file.  That's about it.  

I have to go shopping for a bit, but I should be back this afternoon.  Can we resume this research activity then?

Certainly - usual causes of duplication are doubled locations either because of something like iTunes or an external drive (or onedrive) - sometimes in W7 they may be files that have been moved and can no longer be played from WMP even though they still show. Have you got any that fit the last item?

I read on a forum that wmp will put a song on its list every time you listen to it if the particular box was checked.  But yes.......if you have time we could check some things out.  I often purchase music thru amazon and then export it over to wmp.
