track numbers in front of song names in windows music library, windows 7

Not to interject or interfere, but if I might ask, Janet, what version of Windows are you using on your computer? What version of WMP? No worries, we can walk you thru finding your version of either or both.

We can talk about phones and their multitude of problems with Windoze in a little while. I am still trying to convince my Android to use Album Art that I choose. But that is another, probably unrelated, issue.

Respectfully, Windoze Media Player is a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to Audio (music) files. And using File Manager, oops, my age is showing, File Explorer, to edit Properties, is one step this side of using a toothbrush to paint the house.

Having said that, I use WMP for many things. But  I use Third Party (in the vernacular, Anybody But Windoze) software to edit File Properties. Mp3Tag is my favorite. No worries. I will post a link if you are still talking to me. :)

I did notice that when you Rip CD's, your WMP is set to Rip as .wma files. No worries. I only want to mention that you have full control over how WMP Rips, where it saves the files, in what format, and at what quality.

Humble apologies if that is Too Much Information. I am happy to resubmit it in plain American (apologies RicW. Two countries separated by a common language! :D) with Screenshots.

Don't make me teach you about Screenshots... :D <BIG GRIN>

I have not had to do a system restore for so long now I cannot recall what impact it has on WMP - if any. There are a couple of other options which we should look at first but clearly if you cannot delete at all something's not right - it may be user account corruption of some sort. I'll be back tomorrow... R.

Hi - thanks for your input - all thoughts welcome. There's something slightly unusual going on here - one of those where actually being able to see what's happening would help! I've looked at your other WMP post too - hope you get some feedback - Cheers, Ric.

Ric and Janet, this is a terrific thread to read. I will not interject, as I strongly believe that there should only be ONE instructor at a time. I came in to the Forum only to look around and see if an issue I had just resolved had previously been covered, and I got thoroughly involved reading this delightful thread. Janet, I am sure that this has been less than delightful for you! But there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Janet, my fondest wish is that you know that Windows Media Player is a PLAYER. It is only a player. It does not manage your Music Files. In WMP, the only thing that you can do that will destroy your music is to tell WMP to Delete a song from the Library AND your computer. You can Delete from Libraries all you want. Well, actually, if I understand your missives correctly, currently you aren't able to delete ...  :(

You are not the first person to struggle with Libraries in WMP and you will not be the last.

Ric, kudos for all your efforts. Janet, there is more than one way to solve this. Take courage and take hope!

Ok.................this is what I have:  I cannot delete ANY song track in wmp.  So, I moved all my music into a "playlist" thinking that might help and it does not.  I still cannot delete ANY song track in WMP.  I right click mouse, then delete and it asks me if I want to delete in library only or library and computer.  I chose library only, then clicked ok.   Nothing happens!  No error message, no nothing. 

Now...........I can sent a song to the trash in music library on computer.  Instead of deleting it, it asks now if I want to move it to trash.  This change  of delete to trash also happened at the same time the other Sh#$ happened in wmp after restoring it.

So......................I have a question.  If I restore my computer to a date prior to all this, will it put WMP back to what it was at that time also?  Cause, this is getting ridiculous.  It just keeps snowballing.  I would rather just have the duplicate song tracks than go through all of this.

Please advise.

I have to leave for a while but will be back this afternoon and I will back up all my music in my computer library.
