Windows Update Error 0x800f0922

Hi,  while most recent (14/02/18) auto updates were installing they failed and windows removed failed files. Problem error code 0x800f0992 appeared, not sure what to do as website does not explain how to cure problem with any clarity. Possibly to do with NET framework. Should I wait for possible patch/workaround.

your usual expertise would be appreciated.

Hi Rob,

Error 0x800f0922 occurs when downloading the newest update of Windows 10. It also means that you have less than 500 MB in system reserved partition. You may follow the methods provided below and check if you'll be able to update your device.

Method 1. Check your Internet connection

You need to make sure that you have an internet connection and if possible, you are using wired connections

Method 2. Check .NET Framework

Make sure you have the latest version of NET Framework installed. You may enable it in Windows features. Here's how:

  1. Type Windows Features on the search bar and press Enter.
  2. Select Turn Windows Features on or off.
  3. Check any boxes related to DotNet Framework and save selection.
  4. Restart your PC.

Method 3. Turn off your Firewall

We know that this is strange doing, but even Firewall can prevent updates occasionally. Here's how you can turn it off:

  1. Type Firewall on the search bar and press Enter.
  2. Open Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
  3. Turn off Firewall for both private and public networks.
  4. Save your selection.
  5. After saving your selection, you may try updating your device.

    I am not surprised that all these suggestions do not work.

    The error has nothing to do with a partition missing, too small or having not enough space, the dotNet version, firewall on or off, the phases of the moon or Microsoft's share price. 

    What most likely is the case that foreign (non Microsoft) updates are included in the update package (Adobe!!!!), or that too many Microsoft updates are attempted at once in one run (unlikely, but dependency issues may have been overlooked or missing).

    As I experienced this error and discovered that none of the suggested solutions in this forum worked - some are actually generic and plain nonsense - I did the following: 

    1. located and downloaded the individual update components - one by one. Make sure that you have all updates singled out. 
    2. Run all Microsoft updates in sequence (issue date) - one by one. Again, You may want to run the 'Windows Update Fix' via the troubleshooter and check - just in case.
    3. Run all non-Microsoft updates - one by one. You may want to run the 'Windows Update Fix' via the troubleshooter and check - just in case.  

    Re 2) and 3): One or more of the single run updates may fail - that's OK. You know now what causes the error and that gives you a handle for solving the whole update dilemma. You may want to run the 'Windows Update Fix' via the troubleshooter and retry the failing update or skip it.

    The whole process as described above takes some time - but I was able to fix my Windows update problems. 

    I recall that both Adobe (Flash) and Intel (Driver packages) caused the problems in my case.

    Hi Jop,

    If the issue remains even after enabling all .NET Framework feature under Windows Features, I suggest resetting the Windows Update components. This procedure will refresh the Windows Update components and create a new SoftwareDistribution folder for the update files. You will need administrative permission to perform this task.

    1. Download the Reset Windows Update Agent from this page.
    2. Click ResetWUEng.zip and select I agree.
    3. Save the zip file.
    4. Open the file and run ResetWUEng.
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the process to finish.
    6. Restart your PC.
    7. Run Windows Update.

    Let me know the results.

    Hi Adrianne, thank you for response, I was away at weekend so I have only just picked up my emails.

    This solution worked for me thanks and I did not have to mess with the firewall. Sometimes the simpler actions are the best. I have to admit that now my first port of call is this community site as I find MS support quite lacking or over complicated.

    I get Error 0x800f0922 for the 2018-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 x64 based system KB4284835 . I have tried much troubleshooting.

    I see on this Microsoft website it says "The error could also mean there isn't enough free space in the System Reserved partition. You might be able to fix this problem by using third-party software to increase the size of the System Reserved partition. "

    I am just confused about how this happened in the first place. How and why did my System Reserve partition get full?  How do I fix this? Can anybody recommend what software to use to fix this issue of the system reserve partition being full or is there some other way to do it without resorting to third-party software? Are there risks? I am reluctant to reinstall everything. That is a very time consuming process and I have complicated software on this PC which is a lot of work to reinstall.
