Windows Update Error 0x800f0922

Hi,  while most recent (14/02/18) auto updates were installing they failed and windows removed failed files. Problem error code 0x800f0992 appeared, not sure what to do as website does not explain how to cure problem with any clarity. Possibly to do with NET framework. Should I wait for possible patch/workaround.

your usual expertise would be appreciated.

Hi Rob,

Error 0x800f0922 occurs when downloading the newest update of Windows 10. It also means that you have less than 500 MB in system reserved partition. You may follow the methods provided below and check if you'll be able to update your device.

Method 1. Check your Internet connection

You need to make sure that you have an internet connection and if possible, you are using wired connections

Method 2. Check .NET Framework

Make sure you have the latest version of NET Framework installed. You may enable it in Windows features. Here's how:

  1. Type Windows Features on the search bar and press Enter.
  2. Select Turn Windows Features on or off.
  3. Check any boxes related to DotNet Framework and save selection.
  4. Restart your PC.

Method 3. Turn off your Firewall

We know that this is strange doing, but even Firewall can prevent updates occasionally. Here's how you can turn it off:

  1. Type Firewall on the search bar and press Enter.
  2. Open Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
  3. Turn off Firewall for both private and public networks.
  4. Save your selection.
  5. After saving your selection, you may try updating your device.

    Hello Rob,

    I tried all the above, but still getting this error messages, please help me, its just this update keep failing, will really appreciate it.

    Failure    Content Install    Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800f0922: 2018-05 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1 on Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 for x64 (KB4099635).

    Hello Justine, 

    I get the same error code with update KB4103727. 

    When my laptop restarts it attempts to update but ends up displaying a message that roughly translates to "Updates can not be completed, undoing changes, do not turn off the computer". 

    When I'm finally logged in, I get a pop up that says "We couldn't finish installing update", but when Iopen Windows Update in settings it says "Your device is up to date". Then, minutes later it automatically looks for updates and finds KB4103727 and asks to restart.

    I have also gotten the error code 0x80070643 before. 

    I have tried the 3 methods you described as well as methods described on forums about the latter error code, but it still keeps trying to update and fail. 

    What can I do to resolve this? 

    I hope you can help.

    Hi Justine, Thank you for quick response.  I do have some further of questions.

    1). Can the reserved partition be called the 'Recovery Partition'? as I only have 450mb in that partition but I do have 218 GB free on main partition.

    2).Should I try to expand  Recovery Partition?

    3). I have just managed to find detail of update on MS site and it has note stating update shows negative install although it has been successfully installed. They also state they are working on corrective update. Should I hold fast or do I actually have problem?

    4). When you state check any boxes related to 'DotNet' do you mean '**.NET'**as I could not find examples of 'DotNet' ?

    Thank you for posting back and we're sorry for the delay.

    1. The system reserve and recovery partition are two different things. The former is created during Windows installation and has a fixed drive space of 500mb in Windows 10. It contains the Boot Manager, Boot Configuration Data (both responsible for booting Windows 10), and the startup files used for BitLocker Drive Encryption. While the latter is created by the user or device manufacturer for recovery purposes in case of a serious system error. It usually contains the device drivers, software, and manuals.
    2. Should you need more drive space for your recovery partition, by all means, you can increase it if you still have unallocated drive space left or by shrinking other drive partitions.

     OK so WHICH partition needs to be larger. The OEM Recovery or the Reserve ? Any suggestions on how to accomplish this task ? Thanks

     OK so if the newest Windows 10 KB4487017 (OS Build 17134.590) for the last 2 days. Error code of 0x800f0922. So frustrated. Microsoft insists on forcing you to use this and now they just leave you hanging and expect us to fix what is clearly YOUR error. How frustrating do you think this is  to the consumer? Ready to go to MAC and you folks are making a great case for this to happen. NO help, no one cares, no one responds. So how should we treat you folks ?

     I have changed NOTHING and been updating for 2.5 years now and then this build just will not  complete ! FRUSTRATED to the MAX !  not update (after 2.5 years WHICH partition needs to be enlarged and by how much ? The Reserve or the Recovery ? Why is this happening after 2 plus years ? I can tell you that this is so very frustrating Microsoft.
