Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

    On that screen, I would want to choose "Download & install updates...", if I knew I were connected to the internet. However, your circumstance is precarious - so "Not right now" has an appeal as well.

    i am not connected to the internet so i chose “Not Right Now” and i followed all the other steps from the link u sent and after it was done with the repair upgrade my computer restarted and is just back on tbe choose keyboard layout screen and im stuck in the same loop from the beginning

    That's incredible. But it does work for some, & I vaguely recall someone had to try it twice before it would work for him. Maybe try once more, but I think I would opt for a clean install...

    I have they same issue, but right after my PC updated it lead me right to the same thing. It asks me for the keyboard then some options come onto the screen. The first option is Continue, next is Use a device, use another operating system, troubleshoot, and turn off your pc. After I click trouble shoot And attempt to reset my pc, it doesnt work so I go into advanced and enter “chkdsk c: /f” it says” The type of file is NTFS

    Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volune is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLED TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) “ 

    What should I do?
