Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

    I’m having the same problem of being stuck in an infinate “Choose your keyboard layout loop”.

    I’ve tried “Use another operating system” then Windows 10 volume 3 and that just takes me to a very stripped back version of Windows. Nothing works however.

    My F keys are used by pressing Fn+ F8 etc as my F keys are on the number keys.  I’ve tried F8, F11, F12 and Esc while booting up but none of them do anything. 

    After I’ve chosen a language it gives me other options including “Troubleshoot”. 

    System Restore, Go to previous version, System Image Recovery and Startup Repair dont work for various reasons.  Can I do anything with Command Prompt or UEFI Firmware Settings?

    I’ve also made a Windows Restore usb stick off another computer but don’t know don’t know how to make it work.

    I’m not worried about keeping my contents but I need my computer working again.

    I wonder what your partitions look like after that. Here are mine, but I had a normal upgrade. Well, I had a much lesser problematic one, anyhow - none of the "Windows on drive 3" stuff.

    ReagentC  /Info

    Partition 1 is a leftover empty Recovery Environment partition of a previous Windows version. ReagentC  shows where Shift+Restart will go...

    Hi, yes it has done the same to me.  I haven't braved it yet.  I also read about Avast - as it's easy to reinstall I would definitely give that a go. Also someone pointed out that my laptop may have gone to sleep on powersave mode part way through the original update so I have reset the powersave settings to stay on all the time when plugged in and I'm going to brave doing an update again Friday night when I have the weekend to unravel any issues.  Good luck (to us both)

    As a reply to this. I uninstalled avast and did the update again. Everything seemed to work, but when I went to shut down it wanted me to update again. Hoping thats just related to uninstalling avast or something, but I'm not going to have a chance to get on the pc for a few days so I won't know for sure

    Hello everyone! I've been screwed over by this update as well. I think I managed to somehow get myself into an even bigger mess. I don't exactly remember what I did, but I think I chose to boot up a different version of windows 10. I think the option was under the windows rollback button (no pictures, sorry) and it went through an update. After the update, I was able to login after receiving a system warning. Now I'm stuck with a version of windows that's invalid (even though the year and a half I've had it it's worked perfectly fine and was bought onto the computer). And on top of the limited privileges an invalid copy of Windows has, my task bar is trashed. The start menu is inaccessible. Now, mind you, I'm not a college student, nor am I someone who has any work related files on my computer. The most things of value I have are my old drawings and Corel Painter 5. Quite frankly, at this point, I just want to put it out of its misery and reset my windows, but I'm unable to. I've seen the method with using f8 while booting, but my computer doesn't respond to that. Another problem is, is that the affected computer is our only computer that has a connection to the internet. I'm honestly sorry for the long read, but I've decided to try my luck here first, just to see if anyone has a solution to this. I figured this would be the best place to start, since Microsoft has been dead silent about this issue. Thanks!
