Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

    No, your USB will not be ruined.  But you must remove everything from it prior to using it, as everything on it will be deleted in the process.  But no, after you are done, you will be fine to delete everything and use it as a normal USB drive again.

    I've just spent 11 hours trying to fix this issue and finally re-installing Windows 10 and all of my father's software on his laptop.

    Microsoft, this is unacceptable. I'm now exhausted and at risk of missing work deadlines.

    I usually surf these help forums desperate for something to help and find nothing but with a combination of things and nothing techie I have got my pc back working with the pesky update too.  So, i experienced the blue screens looping round and not letting me in. I tried Juan’s suggestion of changing the default to Windows 10 on volume 4 (for me) and just like Dag got the ‘desktop unavailable etc’ message. I did the following

    1. From the black desktop with just a recycle bin i pressed CTL ALT DEL and from the pop up window selected Task Manager.

    i then  clicked File, Run Task, Browse  and from there was able to back up my files to an external hard drive with copy

    1.  You do then need another PC that is working (thankyou daughter) and a USB/drive of 8GB (found one at Tesco). On the working PC, go to the Microsoft website https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 and from there select ‘using  the tool to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or iso-file) to install Windows 10 on a different PC. This will load windows onto the flash drive.
    2. Go back to you own pc, put the flash drive in the usb port and from the black desktop press the Windows key + R. Browse to find the setup.exe file on the usb stick. Select it and choose Run. Some sites said make sure you are  disconnected from the Internet and disable antivirus but I wasn’t able to do that because I don’t know how and didn’t seem to be online anyway.
    3. The install starts and you’re asked a few questions including, ‘do you want to download and install updates’ or ‘not at the moment’. I selected not at the moment the first time but after about an hour of installing and looking like it was working i went back to the blue screens Loop.
    4. I changed the default system again to Windows 10 on volume 5 (so something had happened as it had gone up a volume). My screen showed Windows Rollback and 3 lots of windows 10 on vol 5.  the first Windows 10 took me back to the blue screens but the second one took me to the black desktop with ‘desktop is unavailable’ message
    5. So if the update from flash drive doesnt work first time, try it again.  Someone on another forum said they did it 3 times.  It worked for me the second time when also i

    clicked yes for ‘do you want to download and install updates’ so try that.

    This was so helpful, and my computer is almost back to normal.  I have all my files and everything works fine EXCEPT I can't get into any of my pdf files. When I click on one, I get a message that says "Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\Mom\Documents...'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." If I try to get into Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, I get a message that says "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat Reader DC\Reader\AcroRd32.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and reinstalled it, but I am still having the problem. I can open the files in a browser, but I cannot open them locally.

    Any ideas on how to fix this?
