Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

So somehow I got onto my pc, but it doesn't have a desktop. I get this error when I try and access it. I can't directly access C drive but I can use the browse feature in the Run window or the 'run new task' under the file menu in task manager. Does this help at all? Can I fix anything from here?

I've just spent 11 hours trying to fix this issue and finally re-installing Windows 10 and all of my father's software on his laptop.

Thank you very much Juan Pablo G.C. and ZackJudd and everyone else who took the time to post detailed assistance.

Microsoft, this is unacceptable. I'm now exhausted and at risk of missing work deadlines.

    Drew

Hi, in this link https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/burn-windows-10-iso-usb/ you have in more detail,

the link to the windows tool that downloads the iso is: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209

I recommend download the iso and then mount because the other option usually fails.

Then follow the steps to grab the other tool to mount the iso in the pendrive that creates a bootable usb, plug in the broken windows and do the following:

After you are in the desktop (of the broken Windows) press Alt-Ctrl-Supr and choose Task Manager

File run new task, browse find the setup.exe in the usb and check the Create this task with administrative privileges.

This is how I ran the setup. Also there you can open the File Explorer portable with administrative tools I mentioned earlier to make a a backup.

Thanks Juan Pablo, it worked perfectly on my system. By the way, restoring Windows 10 with ISO copy, you can choose to keep yr personal files and apps too.  I did it, and it worked smoothly, now even the latest updates are installed with no problems anymore.

I am having this same issue with the Windows 10 rollback. In step 4 when I enter bootrec /fixboot it says "Access is denied"

    What do I do?
