Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

    Yes, basically.  But for me, I had no Reset PC option. So it's more for the people who are stuck without a Reset PC option and don't know what to do.  Figured I'd make it simple for people who had no idea.

    This is unbelievable, i have the same problem as all of you, HELLO MICROSOFT HELLO!!!!!!!!!!

    If i download a windows 10 iso like you are suggesting and reinstall windows keeping my files, will i lose my windows genuine? I dont have a  windows key, the computer came with windows 8 when i buy it and then it updated to windows 10, and now this stupid update broke it...... Will it be genuine after i reinstall it?or will i have to buy a windows key?

    Microsoft dont care about us, this month i bought and Android phone, because a windows phone 10 update screw up my Lumia with a black bar on center of screen i had to be always rebooting the phone and after an hour again a black bar on center of screen, ive quit and changed to Android, and now this on my windows laptop? Hello Ubuntu, goodbye Microsoft

    One person suggested copying the missing 'desktop' to the correct directory. I did this and now I have the black screen desktop and pulsating desktop icons. It looks as if my desktop is having a seizure. 

    Anyone know how to get out of that?
