Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

    1. Of course, I only say Lenovo cause T.O.G tell me he has a Pc of that brand but in fact this work with all the Pc's
    2. No, the device that you have to plug in (if you want to extract your files) (if you want to know how just follow my entire entries on this disscussion) is just for extacting archives and make a backup of your files and stuff, i mean, you do this like a regular usb in a pc, just copy and paste :)
    3. Do you mean where's your downloads into the Pc or where do you have to download something? (I guess the new OS of windows to try to fix this problem with a new fresh instalation of windows). If you mean the first option the downloads or the things that you've downloaded in your pc are still there in the same folder as usual, how I say, just copy and paste all the stuff. However, if you mean the Windows OS, well you have to do a bootable usb and other things, it is more explained in others entries of mine and mr Juan Pablo G.C in this same post.

Now if you mean about the explorer++ that I'm talking about is the first option that appears in google when you search it but just in case this is the link: https://explorerplusplus.com/

    Hope I helped you :)

When the lenovo icon appears hold the power button to force the restart and then turn on the pc again. Do this many times as needed until you see a screen that says that your pc didnt start correctly (usually 3 times), next select the first option and you must be redirected to the same keyboard-choose an option loop that we've talikng about. Next you have to choose "use another operating system" and select windows 10, not windows rollback. What its supposed to happend is that you will see the usually login screen and after you log in you must notice that dont have intenet connection, the win button doesnt work and dont have wallpaper. If this happend there my friend you are in windows safe mode. Then if you want do what i say earlier or try to connect an usb with explorer++ (you have to download it form internet using another pc).

if you choose the explorer++ option you can access to the usb and run this program through run funtion (win+r).

Let me know if this work for you. Good luck.

I think the issue here is that, if everyone else is having the same issue as me, once we manage to get to that wallpaperless desktop, nothing works. The start button doesn't come up, even if I press the windows key on the keyboard. The only thing I can manage to get up is task manager (Ctrl-Shift-Del still seems to work).

I also get the error message saying that my desktop cannot be located. I also cannot run disk check from WinRe because apparently its locked and cannot be checked. I think it's time to start looking into filing legal action against Microsoft. I could go on and on about the personal things that I cannot afford to lose which are currently (hopefully still) on my laptop, but there'd be no point as I'm sure there's thousands of people in the same situation as me. I literally have a university portfolio due in 4 days, on that laptop.

Long story short: Microsoft forces us to install these constant updates, and when things go wrong as per usual they hide away in the corner, waiting and hoping for things to die down (because of profit; ignore problems and let things die down and your stocks are less likely to take a hit.)

All I'm going to say is, I am seriously ashamed of myself for sticking up for Microsoft through all these years and lambasting Apple. Well, at least Apple's users can rest assured that their updates won't brick their computers and that their personal files are fairly safe. Never thought I'd say this, but I seriously need to move to Mac (as I've been hearing more and more recently)

You're right and I pensonally understand your angryness but try to calm down for a sec dude, there are still some things that you can do to try to recover at least your files:

    1. I know that the windows key (win button) doesn't work, it is because in this mode of windows it just load the most basic drivers and for that reason explorer.exe doesn't exist but your pc still recognize when you press this button, try to prees it with the R, it must open the "Run" function.
    2. The desktop error happens because of this same reason, it's a different windows mode and it don't loaded. To solve it you have to press win+r (how I already explain) and then navigate to "This pc", C:/, find the users folder, find your user, find the desktop folder and copy it. Next from the "Run function" aswell, you have to navigate to the path that the error is saying to you and paste the desktop folder. The next thing you must notice is that all the things that you have on your desktop before are back in this wallpaperless mode and the error disappeared. From that you can start trying to do the things that we have been talking about in this post.

Hope I helped you and yeah, calm down a bit men, I know is frustrating and all this stuff (I'm on my last week of class where I have to do preyects, reports, tests, etc and this happens) but there are some solutions that can help with some things. It isn't all over.

Take care and ask again if you need something else :)
