Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

Well done MS. This looks like utter incompetence on your part.

I have two Dell Inspiron Desktops that were working last night. This morning, only one.

The working one was hibernated, the other was shut-down.

The latest Windows 10 update has broken it on restart.

When will you fix it and compensate for the inconvenience?

Same. I want to be compensated for the damage to my computer.

Agreed.  Has anyone called customer service/tech support?  Not their fault, but bad instruction to tell the same thing-- wait 24 to 48 hours, try again, call back....One of the support technicians actually sighed deeply throughout our conversation in response to my frustration (I continued to reiterate I knew it wasn't his fault but I need to have this resolved and to save my files).  After about a week of this, I was told last night to set up an ethernet cable (which I didn't have handy-- who does???) and that I could call back for help in installing the operating system through the website.  When I called back to continue I was told that I could not get help with this over the phone as they could get in trouble for helping me in case I lost my files, so I need to make an appointment and go in person to the Microsoft store (about a 30-minute drive from my home).

I am beside myself.  I use this laptop for work and have things set up a very specific way to ensure that I can do my work efficiently and effectively.  Yesterday I needed to do work outside of the home and was unable to because I can't do this kind of work through my phone.

I will lose at least a day setting things up the same way again.

Microsoft, how are you going to make this right?  Otherwise, I am going to have to switch to Mac, something I never thought I'd say...

Same.  Also, has anyone called the help desk?  I feel bad for them (since I know they have no control over the situation), but the way they are told to handle this is awful.  The first day I called I was told they couldn't do anything to help me at the time and that they couldn't even offer me a case number as they were having a massive update to their computer system, too!  I was told to wait 48 hours, that it was a known issue, and that the engineers were working on it.  The second time I called (48 hours later) I was taken through the same steps I had already performed and then told that the engineers were still working on it and that I would either get an email (never got) or to try again in 48 hours or to call back.  I called back and was told this time that there is nothing that can be done, that the best option is to do a clean installation, and that if I want my files I will need to go to the Microsoft Store where I will need to make an appointment to have my files backed up before doing this installation (at which point I will need to reinstall all of my programs, etc.  I was under the impression that I was calling technical support, but I was told by the technician that he was going to transfer me to a technician, put me on hold for about 5 minutes, and then told me that the technician would just tell me the same thing.  I use my laptop for work, so I am beyond frustrated as I try to handle my business on the road.  I seriously am considering switching to a Mac (something I never thought I'd say) as this experience has been so horrible (also, the third technician I spoke with-- yes, I have spoken with 4!!!-- deeply sighed during our whole conversation as he seemed frustrated with me because I wanted to keep my files...they really need to use the mute function if they have no sympathy/empathy).  I want compensation for the time, effort, and emotional distress of not having my trusted laptop available.

    Microsoft, what is your solution???

I have the same problem.  I've been waiting for MS to contact me with a solution for over a week now.  At first they said it was elevated to "2nd tier" or something similar.  They set a time to call me, but didn't.  Does anyone know if they have a solution that doesn't involve booting from some kind of mysterious disk that no-one has?

Well, I don't know what the error message is about. If it causes Notepad not to work properly, then it must be done (as I wrote) in a Command Prompt in the recovery environment of external Win 10 Installation media.

However, first try what wych07 said just above this post - just click the Browse button...

    An Explorer-like requestor will open.

    (a) Set it for "all files" at the bottom right.

    (b) Browse to what you want to copy in the left pane.

    (c) Right-click it, & select "Copy".

    (d) Click the external media in the left pane.

    (e) Right-click a blank area in the right pane, & select "Paste".
