Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

After making a backup of the files, I mounted the latest iso and installed keeping apps and finally it installed fine and worked, even the account has been recovered. The file is the MediaCreationTool1803.exe then mount in a usb with Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool-Installer-en-US, x64 version.

Well finally solved, good luck everyone.

    Hello,

The new April 2018 update, that I started yesterday (5/20/2018), never completed and my windows does not boot. Here are some details:

    • PC: ACER ASPIRE S7
    • Start Menu -> Power Off -> Install Updates and Restart
    • Got Stuck on:

    Working on updates

    9% complete

    Don't turn off your computer

    • Turned off the computer after waiting for about five hours.
    • Stuck on “Restoring your previous version of Windows (with the five dots rotating above it)”
    • Turned off the computer after waiting for a few hours.
    • Stuck in Boot loop (2 screens kept repeating, acer logo screen, then the "Restoring your previous version of Windows" screen, then automatic restart and …)
    • I can access my files using a bootable USB, so my hard drive is working.
    • Used a "Windows 10 installation media" USB, to access advanced boot menu.
    • "Go back to the previous version" gives the message "We ran into a problem ..."

    -  Used “command prompt”, and ran: chkdsk c: /r /x

    • After reboot, no more boot loop, but again stuck in "Restoring your previous version of Windows" for hours!
    • Again used “command prompt” to run

    chkdsk c: /f (successful)

    bootrec /fixmbr (successful)

    bootrec /fixboot (Access denied)

bootrec /rebuildbcd (No windows installation found)

    bcdboot c:\windows /s c: (Not successful)

    • After restart, again stuck in "Restoring your previous version of Windows" for hours!

I am giving up and will probably need to do a clean windows install. But, I am asking to see if there is anything else that I can do first. Also, does Microsoft somehow support its customers, when something like this happens that is totally caused by a Microsoft update?

    Thank you

Hey, take a look at my other answer. If you copy and paste (with my method) the desktop from your user folder located at "this pc" and disk C:/ to the path that you're giving to us the problem is solved and you will see the things that you had in your desktop and now (at least) you can try to extract your files.

Stay in contact to see what else we can be helpful because Microsoft doesn't repond :(
