Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

You need to install a program on your working computer - either Rufus, as I suggested in my post (which I have a link to an article on how to use it correctly), or as another person suggested, you can use the windows tool (that sfad62 suggested) to make a bootable USB drive. Follow my instructions around the part where it says to download Rufus and follow it step by step of still confused. I included clickable links in the steps to send you to the correct sites.

I've just spent 11 hours trying to fix this issue and finally re-installing Windows 10 and all of my father's software on his laptop.

Thank you very much Juan Pablo G.C. and ZackJudd and everyone else who took the time to post detailed assistance.

Microsoft, this is unacceptable. I'm now exhausted and at risk of missing work deadlines.

    Drew

Your welcome Drew! I took about a little over 24 hours to fix my laptop trying different things.  So figured I could save people some time who were having the same problem as me!  Glad to be of help!

    Zack

Zack, I've followed all your steps but once I finished installing windows 10, they brought me back to the choose keyboard page. However, when I select "use another operating system" I now have another Windows 10 on Volume 3. In total, I have 4 options; 1 Windows Rollback and 3 Windows 10 on Volume 3. I would appreciate your advise.
