Fall Creators Update Resulting in High CPU Use By Service Host

Hi,

After updating to the new version, I am seeing high CPU use from two processes:

Any ideas on how to make them not use a lot of CPU so that my laptop cools down and the fan stops blowing?

Hi all, 

Had the same problem myself and found the solution which is quite simple :

Go to settings -> update & security -> Windows Defender -> Open Windows Defender -> Firewall & Network protection

Then you need to disable the firewall for all the types of networks

once that's done click on restore settings

That should do the trick and you're cpu usage should return to normal.

Hope it helps, it did for me.

    Jean-Baptiste,

    You have delivered me peace and tranquility. No longer are the wind turbines of hell churning within my red hot stove of a surface pro. Seriously my Cpu was never below 40% for days, hitting 99% just opening chrome. Tried every other option (there are years of Service Host problems -_-.)

       Current idle CPU: 1%

    Just did the above and it worked. Is this a permanent fix or does one have to do this every time one reboots? Can I now turn off windows defender and it will still work?

    It just needs doing once - and doesn't return after a reboot (I assume the problem was a rule that, once reset to default, stops the CPU from chewing clock-cycles for no reason).  I would not recommend turning off windows defender.

    Yes, I concur. My problem after the first restart was "ICS" getting started again, irrelevant to this fix.

    It is very rare to find solutions to problems of this caliber in answers.microsoft forums, so thanks again, Jean-Baptiste.
