Fall Creators Update Resulting in High CPU Use By Service Host

Hi,

After updating to the new version, I am seeing high CPU use from two processes:

Any ideas on how to make them not use a lot of CPU so that my laptop cools down and the fan stops blowing?

Hi all, 

Had the same problem myself and found the solution which is quite simple :

Go to settings -> update & security -> Windows Defender -> Open Windows Defender -> Firewall & Network protection

Then you need to disable the firewall for all the types of networks

once that's done click on restore settings

That should do the trick and you're cpu usage should return to normal.

Hope it helps, it did for me.

    Hi,

    I had the High CPU usage after the install of 1709 so I installed an insider build to see if the usage was the same.  It was.

    I didn't have to disable anything, but I opened Settings, Update and Security, Windows Defender, open Windows Defender Security Center, Firewall and Network Protection, Restore Firewall default settings, hit the button to restore the defaults.

    The usage dropped to 1% and has been holding after numerous reboots.

    By the way, the firewall fix does not appear to be permanent. After a few days, my cpu usage is back and I will have to perform the fix again.

    > Et Al:   I performed the firewall fix (contributed by Jean-Baptiste) about 48 hours ago and my puter (older Toshiba laptop) has been cycled on & since then with no recurrrence of the high CPUsage when I re-boot - - - yet.  If the problem IS a Windows glitch I would imagine that every time it updates it may trigger the problem again...... unless/until they fix it in the meantime. (???)    Keep our fingers crossed!
