Fall Creators Update Resulting in High CPU Use By Service Host

Hi,

After updating to the new version, I am seeing high CPU use from two processes:

Any ideas on how to make them not use a lot of CPU so that my laptop cools down and the fan stops blowing?

Hi all, 

Had the same problem myself and found the solution which is quite simple :

Go to settings -> update & security -> Windows Defender -> Open Windows Defender -> Firewall & Network protection

Then you need to disable the firewall for all the types of networks

once that's done click on restore settings

That should do the trick and you're cpu usage should return to normal.

Hope it helps, it did for me.

    Just did the above and it worked. Is this a permanent fix or does one have to do this every time one reboots? Can I now turn off windows defender and it will still work?

    Jean-Baptiste,

    You have delivered me peace and tranquility. No longer are the wind turbines of hell churning within my red hot stove of a surface pro. Seriously my Cpu was never below 40% for days, hitting 99% just opening chrome. Tried every other option (there are years of Service Host problems -_-.)

       Current idle CPU: 1%

    Well I'm glad it worked for u too. Regarding this solution it is, at least for me, permanent since I restart my computer every morning and never had the issue back.

    This actually worked!

    I've been having this problem after Fall's Creators Update whenever I turn on my Connectify hotspot.

    I think since there was a lot of under the hood improvements for Windows Defender, something went wrong and I hope MS releases the required patch soon enough.

    What the method of Jean-Baptiste does is restarting the Windows Defender Firewall protection. It's not a permanent solution since you probably are going to do it again after a windows restart, but it does the job for your current session.

    Edit:

    It appears that this fix is permanent enough. Apparently the root of the problem is some kind of firewall rule and by this method you will restart Windows Defender Firewall protection rules.

    My problem after the first restart was actually ICS service getting turned on again (which is irrelevant to this fix.)
