Fall Creators Update Resulting in High CPU Use By Service Host

Hi,

After updating to the new version, I am seeing high CPU use from two processes:

Any ideas on how to make them not use a lot of CPU so that my laptop cools down and the fan stops blowing?

Hi all, 

Had the same problem myself and found the solution which is quite simple :

Go to settings -> update & security -> Windows Defender -> Open Windows Defender -> Firewall & Network protection

Then you need to disable the firewall for all the types of networks

once that's done click on restore settings

That should do the trick and you're cpu usage should return to normal.

Hope it helps, it did for me.

    It happened to me commensurate with the Nov 15th W10 update and also, unfortunately, coincided with my purchase/installation of AVAST Premier.  Don't really know which was to blame, but after I uninstalled AVAST it still existed.  Once I found and used Jean-Baptiste's 'fix' everything has seemingly returned to "normal" (I hope).

    You only disable the firewall for a few seconds.  As soon as you "restore settings" - the firewall is turned back on for all network types.

    If you are worried about being hacked during the 15 seconds that your firewall needs to be disabled, simply disconnect from the internet.

    Your fix does not work if you have Hyper-V enabled.  Restoring settings on the firewall does.

    Good to know it fixed yours, but I don't want to disable the firewall on my PC

    However, I found another trick, but only if you don't use Ethernet.

    1. Right-click on Network icon on taskbar > Open Network & Internet Settings
    2. Click "Change adapter settings"
    3. Disable everything that is not Wi-Fi
    4. Search "Services" from Start Menu/Cortana
    5. Find and double-click on "Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)"
    6. In "General" tab, change Startup type to "Manual", then click OK
    7. Restart computer
    8. If failed, try to shut down the ICS service on Task Manager, then restart again
