Surface Pro 2017, Win 10 Pro x64: Explorer crash (Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll)

Hi:

I have periodic explorer crashes on my Surface Pro 2017, Win Pro x64 (it is fully updated). The crash seems to occur periodically after a Hello Windows log-in (this occurs after the computer was sleeping rather than on a fresh boot). It seems to involve Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll based on the below.

When I look in the Event viewer I see errors like this:

I am at a loss to understand what the problem is here. I am glad to disable Hello Windows if this would end the problem. Thanks in advance for any help on this!

    I have the dump file and the issue may be with the Intel graphics as two components of the Intel graphics driver are referenced in the crash (igd10iumd64.dll and  igc64.dll):

    GetUrlPageData2 (WinHttp) failed: 12002.

    Probably caused by : Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll ( Windows_UI_XamlHost!wil::details::ReportFailure+e5 )

    You could try updating the Intel graphics driver.

    You may be able to use the latest version from Intel:

    If not you may have to wait for an update to be pushed out from Windows Update.

    The  DropboxExt64.19.0.dll is also referenced in the crash but from the symptoms you described the issue is more likely the Intel graphics driver.

    Thanks auggy I am getting the Intel Graphics driver now. I will report back with more info (hopefully not from a explorer crash but if I do I will include the CrashDump).

    I have DropBox loaded but it is literally never on (not even in the background: it does not load at startup). I do see DropBox Service and DropBox update as Background processed on my machine. I am glad to uninstall DropBox since I can simply use the browser interface. If you think that would be helpful let me know.

    PS This is a bit off topic but I am not sure I am getting all updates. I am pretty sure I did not get a Surface firmware updates that came out a few weeks back and here the driver. Is there some setting which would be preventing me from getting all of these?

    If you are not sure you are getting the updates the following article has some links:

    The presently installed Intel graphics driver may be the latest available from Microsoft.

    As long as the Windows Update Service is functioning properly and you haven't changed settings to delay updates you should get them automatically.

    At this time you can leave Dropbox as is or uninstall if you wish.

    Thanks: I have the updates set to be delayed but I just do not seem to be ever given the option of firmware or driver updates. Cannot see a setting that would change that :(

    I did manually add the most recent Surface firmware update

    Apparently updating the graphics driver is not enough.

    I should add here are common things:

    • this happens after resuming from sleep but only when *not* plugged in
    • Edge browser is unresponsive and must be manually shut down via Task Manager
