Hi:

I have periodic explorer crashes on my Surface Pro 2017, Win Pro x64 (it is fully updated). The crash seems to occur periodically after a Hello Windows log-in (this occurs after the computer was sleeping rather than on a fresh boot). It seems to involve Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll based on the below.

When I look in the Event viewer I see errors like this:

Event ID 1000

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 10.0.16299.125, time stamp: 0xfeba44fb

Faulting module name: Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll, version: 10.0.16299.15, time stamp: 0x00f27b8f

    Hi,

In most cases, this error is caused by a corrupted Windows file associated with the computer system. For better assistance, we would like to know if you noticed any changes made on your computer prior to the issue?

As an initial troubleshooting, we recommend that you perform a clean boot to remove software conflicts on your computer. For your reference, check this article on how to perform a clean boot in Windows. If the issue didn't occur after performing a clean boot, we suggest that you enable the services one by one to identify which service is causing the problem. Once you've identified the corrupted file or service, it is better to leave it disabled or uninstall it completely.

We'll be waiting for your response.

I have not made any changes (not even added any app).

I am not sure how a clean boot will help here. It is a periodic problem, so I am not sure how I would be able to see what the source of the problem.

Since this problem happens periodically, it is better to observe your computer after performing a clean boot so that we can continue troubleshooting the issue if it still persists.

    Regards.

Thanks. I tried a clean boot and did in fact get the same problem.

I added a small edit to my original post to indicate this occurs after the computer was sleeping (rather than a fresh boot).

Thank you for the update. If this problem occurs after the sleep mode, we can try to run the Power troubleshooter and check if it fixes the issue. To run the Power troubleshooter, follow these steps:

    1. In Cortana search, type control panel.
    2. Choose Control Panel from the list.
    3. In the search box at the upper-right corner of the window, type and click Troubleshooting.
    4. Select View all in the left pane of the window.
    5. Click Power and follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

Also, run the System File Checker tool to scan and repair missing or corrupted system files. Click this link on how to use the System File Checker tool.

Update us with the outcome so we can provide further assistance.
