Surface Pro 2017, Win 10 Pro x64: Explorer crash (Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll)

Hi:

I have periodic explorer crashes on my Surface Pro 2017, Win Pro x64 (it is fully updated). The crash seems to occur periodically after a Hello Windows log-in (this occurs after the computer was sleeping rather than on a fresh boot). It seems to involve Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll based on the below.

When I look in the Event viewer I see errors like this:

Event ID 1000

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 10.0.16299.125, time stamp: 0xfeba44fb

Faulting module name: Windows.UI.XamlHost.dll, version: 10.0.16299.15, time stamp: 0x00f27b8f

Exception code: 0xc0000409

If I click on Start > type "view all" then click on "View all problem reports Control panel" the "Windows Explorer" "Stopped working" errors and then double click on one I would get something like this:

Another explorer crash exactly like the previous ones.

Not sure if it is related but the Edge browser stopped a few hours before (though this did not happen most times I had an explorer crash):

via Start > type "view all" then click on "View all problem reports Control panel" the "Windows Explorer" "Stopped working" errors and then double click on one I would get something like this

I imagine this will never get resolved. Trying to figure out which is worse: Windows 10 or my Surface Pro 2017. Tough choice.

    I already tried the SFC.

The troubleshooting only turned on sleep for battery (which I have turned off since that crashes my Surface).

I need a specific suggestion. This is not very helpful.

PS Sorry Gerben that you have been having the same problems. This Surface has been exceptionally disappointing. I would not expect this level of instability from such a pricey machine (and one that Microsoft makes)

Thank you for the update. If this problem occurs after the sleep mode, we can try to run the Power troubleshooter and check if it fixes the issue. To run the Power troubleshooter, follow these steps:

    1. In Cortana search, type control panel.
    2. Choose Control Panel from the list.
    3. In the search box at the upper-right corner of the window, type and click Troubleshooting.
    4. Select View all in the left pane of the window.
    5. Click Power and follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

Also, run the System File Checker tool to scan and repair missing or corrupted system files. Click this link on how to use the System File Checker tool.

Update us with the outcome so we can provide further assistance.

Thanks. I tried a clean boot and did in fact get the same problem.

I added a small edit to my original post to indicate this occurs after the computer was sleeping (rather than a fresh boot).
