Windows 10 Upgrade an ASUS Laptop (32G storage)

I have the same problem, I was told by my friend that you should uninstall the windows 10 update that you currently have and then install the newest version of Windows and if that doesn't work, then I am sorry for wasting your time**.**

Your friend makes it sound so simple. Clearly it is not or there would not be so many disgruntled users posting on this forum.

First of all I would like to say thanks for your excellent set of instructions. They seemed daunting at first but I worked through them and eventually got there successfully - however I did deviate in a couple of areas to achieve the result.

With regard to point 3. I found I couldn't download the ISO file to the SD Card (NTFS formatted) in the D: drive due to lack of space. I followed the tip given by Stephen-C-Norris on April 5, 18 and downloaded the ISO onto the SD Card with it plugged into my desktop machine. I also extracted the file using 7-zip (WinRAR didn't work for me) while the SD Card was still in my desktop machine.

I had found previously when carrying out upgrades on my Asus E200H that it didn't recognise the Micro SD Card slot on the Asus so I fitted the SD card into a USB adapter and plugged this into the Asus (D: drive). I did this with the extracted ISO file and picked up at point 7. and ran the setup.exe file. At first it needed more space on my D: drive as I was only using a 16GB Micro SD but I deleted the compressed ISO file (~3GB) and the installation ran through (over a couple of hours - but I was having dinner!) so when I returned all I had to do was to respond to the configuration requirements and it was all done. I was running on V1803 of Windows 10.

I checked my C: drive storage and I had ~3GB of free space but I carried out a Disk Clean-up and selected the 'Clean up system files' option and checked to delete previous versions of Windows. This freed up a massive 19GB of space (I'd never been able to free up that amount previously - even when selecting the same option) so it was altogether a successful exercise.  It has returned my Asus to a useful device.

Hoping my findings may be of use to others.

You have exactly the same Asus as I have and have exactly the same problem that I had.

As I mentioned above I followed the instructions given by Richard Eiler on Jan 22 2018 in these posts but I downloaded the ISO file first to the SD Card inserted in a desktop PC that I have (an Intel i7 500GB storage 12GB RAM) so there were no lack of space issues. I also extracted the file in this PC before I transferred the SD Card to the Asus laptop to carry out the upgrade. As I said this worked successfully.

So if you have access to another more powerful PC and follow what I did it should work.

I had the problem with a 32gig Asus E402S, having an empty 256 gig SSD as well...

It had an old version of Win 10 and the disk was too full.  There was nothing to delete and the notebook started to crash.

Update was not possible.

I downloaded the install files via another PC onto an SD card this week to do a fresh update/install of Win10.  I didn't use the ISO, it putted all the files and folders on the SD card.

After starting the install from the SD card in the notebook, it started checking the notebook and that took a lot of time.  It asked if I wanted to keep my files and settings or not, I indicated 'keep nothing' to save disk space but still it needed 2 extra gig of free space on my C drive, while I indicated the 256gig D-drive as extra space for the install.

I spent a few hours then looking for files to delete.  As times passed, I noticed that Windows created more junk to take away free disk space again :-)  After a while I noticed some old update files somewhere in the Windows folder and 1 of them was 1.3 gig !  When I deleted that one, install was ready to go.  It started a fresh install without  a hickup.

Then a miracle happened.  When the new win10 home started up, there was 15gig of free disk space!  I could delete the Old Windows folder too with another 2.5gig of extra space.  With a few small things + office365, I now have 12gig of free space again and it runs great.

I lost the previous settings but since my files are on Onedrive and I use web mail, it was very easy to set it up as before.

Let's see how long it takes now before Windows eats this 12 gig again.

Since I am quite old, I still prefer my trusted office 2000 and installed excel and Access 2000 on this notebook too next to office 365.

It still runs good under Win10!  Excel starts up in a blink of the eye and does not have this crappy ribbon that only takes away screen space and confuses me all the time.  The same with Access, the user interface today sucks big time, 2K was Much much much better :-)  When you use it a lot like me this is important.
