Windows 10 Upgrade an ASUS Laptop (32G storage)

Hi,

If you can post a snapshot of your Disk Management window for us to take a look at that could be helpful.

Right-click on the start button and select Disk Management, (it may take a few seconds for the window to populate), have the USB that you are using plugged in as well and that it is visible in the snapshot(s) also.

You can use the Windows 10 Snipping tool to take the snapshot of the window. Take a rectangular snip then give it a name and save it.

The instructions that I supplied should have worked, perhaps I should have been more clear as to the exact intricacies of the procedure. I'll post them here again with some additions and bold print to highlight the most important parts to achieve success. I hope that this helps;

1. Visit the Microsoft site and go to Download Windows 10 page.
2. Use the Media Creation tool to download the latest version of Windows 10.
3. Choose not to upgrade now but rather download the ISO file to use to perform the upgrade later (be sure to select the correct Edition and architecture (32bit or 64bit) for your device. (To do this, follow the instructions for Creating media to install on a different PC).
4. Save the ISO to the SD card (or USB stick) (formatted in NTFS, you must reformat the SD card or the USB drive that you will be using to the NTSF format before beginning the download) (a 32GB or above quality brand name SD card or USB drive is recommended).
5. Once the ISO file download is completed to the SD card (or USB drive) go to the resulting SD/USB folder and right click on the ISO file.
6. Then, using a free program (for example WinRAR - www.rarlab.com - or 7zip - www.7-zip.org/) extract all         

    contents of the ISO file to a new folder in the same SD card/USB drive.

7. Then, open the resultant new folder and right click on the setup.exe file and select the "run as administrator" option.
8. Then, choose the Upgrade Now option, the program will then proceed to upgrade (feature update) the installation of Windows 10 in your computer. When prompted, choose to keep your apps and files if/as that is your choice.
9. When the installation program asks for more space, choose once again the SD card/USB stick. (In some     

    cases you may have to click on "Fix Issues", if presented, to be given the choice).

This has worked for thousands of people that are using devises with tiny and/or space restricted SSD's.

Hi Richard,

I followed all the instructions, but unfortunately it doesn't work. At a certain stage during the procedure, you have to choose whether you take option A (use of internal memory) or option B( extrenal memory, USB stick). When you take option B indeed some 5GB is assigned to the USB stick (of the 32GB available) but the system still asks for additional space in the internal memory. Even after deleting all personal files and uninstalling all software (office, antivirus etc) it still asks for some 260 MB extra on the internal memory. Not much, but it is simply not available as everything that could be uninstalled, is already uninstalled... I tried it a number of times, with deletion if all unnecessary files.

Very frustrating.

Don't understand how it is possible that windows 10, installed by the manufacturer on the asus 32 GB machine, and therefore apparently on a machine that meets the requirements, is unable to install one of its first updates on the machine.  The Asus was bought only three weeks ago, brandnew in a sealed box.

If you know any other method to deal with the problem, I certainly would appreciate it !

First of all, it's good to hear that you were able to get the Feature Update (version upgrade) to version 1709 installed on your device.

As to the rest of your query, this largely has to do with the storage controller that is present (chosen by the OEM) that is installed or present on the device. They do very from device to device, even within the same OEM. Any updates on/for such pertaining to their devices still being supported for Widows 10 new version iterations would be available on their "Software and Drivers" support site page. For example, if your device treats the SD card slot as more of a SD card reader than a storage expansion drive then attempting to use the SD card "slot" media as a memory (additional or secondary system drive space) may not be readily possible.

Do note that: Many limited disk space models that are sold by numerous manufacturers do have the option to upgrade to a larger onboard main drive for additional storage capacity, (this is not possible on all such devices). If said is indeed an option for your device then that would, perhaps, be the better way to go, check your devices OEM's support/accessories site page(s) for more info and/or availability thereof.

That being said, I would try a new fresh SD card to try to change the save options for your apps/personal files using the Settings options in Win 10 to try again now that the installation has completed. These should be self explanatory and can be found at Settings >System >Storage >Change were new content is saved. Again, this may or may not be possible do to the OEM's configuration of your device. Hi Richard 

I followed all of these steps exactly, but it didn't prompt me to use the sd card. I opted to "keep nothing", so it just wiped my storage and reinstalled on the main drive again. There's nothing on the SD card apart from the extracted ISO file so I guess I'll have to wait for more updates to see if they will save to the SD card?

I also selected to save my content to the SD but it made my machine crash and the SD drive kept disconnecting and saying there were errors, so I've had to change my settings back to saving to the Asus main drive for apps, photos etc. Do you think this is because the machine just can't handle running apps from the SD, or is it related to the formatting I did?

Yea, the upgrade assistant is supposed to work as per the Wiki article instructions but apparently it's having a problem playing nice with some device setups, storage controllers, or whatever, for whatever reason(s).
