Display problems on some AMD Radeon video cards after installing an update

An update was recently installed and now my AMD Radeon HD 3200 display adapter is not working as it did before. I’ve lost my preferred resolution option and the ability to use multiple monitors, and the adapter type is now reported as Microsoft Basic Display Driver. Any suggestions?

Hi Shirlen,

We are aware of a problem that resulted in an incorrect driver update for some AMD Radeon HD 2000, 3000, and 4000 series adapters.

(Updated: 12/18/17)

If you were impacted by the incorrect driver, Windows Update KB4057291 has been released that will install a driver to restore multi-monitor display and resolution control capabilities.  Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install the update to resolve your issue.  You can also go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website to install the update.

(With the release of Windows Update KB4057291, it should no longer be necessary to manually delete the improper driver, as was originally recommended below.)

*****

Follow these steps for all versions of Windows 10 to manually delete the 22.19.128.0 driver from the system and recover the recommended driver version (8.970.100.9001):

  1. Start Device Manager. To do this, press and hold (or right-click) the Start Menu icon, and then select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters, right-click the adapter that has the problem driver installed, and then select Properties.
  3. Select the Driver tab and verify driver version is 22.19.128.0.
  4. Select Uninstall Device.
  5. Check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.” This step is important and will prevent the problematic driver from reinstalling in the future.
  6. The system may require a reboot at this point. Reboot if needed, then reopen Device Manager.
  7. Select any device, then click Action -> Scan for hardware changes.
  8. Recheck the driver version.  If it still reports 22.19.128.0, repeat steps 4 to 7 until the recommended driver (8.970.100.9001) is re-installed.  If this resolves your graphics problems, you can stop here.  If a different driver version is installed, follow the next step to check for the driver using Windows Update.
  9. Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.

Update applied and now at 19xx whatever widescreen BUT display area stuck at 4:3\

    Help please!

    Hello AnnGnz,

I am not sure to understand your problem (which update is applied, what happens really...?).

-------------------------S ee below what happened on my PC: ------------------------------------------

    • I am using an "old" PC: a Toshiba Satellite purchased in 2009
    • graphic card on this PC is an ATI Mobility Radeon 4500 series which is not supported by AMD under

Windows 10 (AMD no longer supports ATI Radeon 2000, 3000, and 4000 under Windows 10)

    • I was using version 1703 of Windows 10, and had no problem until november 23rd,
    • at this date, suddenly, the aspect of my screen changed. I restarted Windows: same problem.
    • I upgraded from version 1703 to version 1709: same problem.
    • I have a 16:9 screen, but resolution was 1024 x 768 (I could change it to 800 x 600): I had a resolution

for a 4:3 screen, which explains the very bad quality of images  on the sceen.

---> Windows Update had replaced my correct driver by something wrong!

    • after a few days, and many hours spent searching on the web and on my PC, I finally found a way to

    reinstall the correct driver:

    version 8.970.100.9001

    dated 2015-13-01

    and it worked...

    • on dec. 1st, Microsoft recognized there is a problem (see their answer at the beginning of this thread)
    • on dec. 18th, they released update KB4057291 which is supposed to correct this problem:

"Multi-monitor display and display resolution are not working for some AMD legacy cards (for

example, Radeon HD 2000, HD3000, and HD4000 series) that mistakenly receive driver 22.19.128.0.

This update will install a driver to restore multi-monitor display and resolution control capabilities."

    • KB4057291 has been installed on my PC, but it did not change anything, because I had already

      reinstalled the good driver...

-----------------If you want to explain your problem, I suggest this checklist ------------------------

1 - which version of Windows 10: 1703, 1709, other? When has this version been installed?

         ( settings --> system --> system information )

2 - physical size of the screen: 16:9, 4:3, other?

3 - has the update KB4057291 been installed? Has Windows been restarted after update?

         ( s ettings --> update and security --Windows Update --> display...)4

    • what is the model of your graphic card (run Device Manager and click on Graphic card )?

5 -  clicking on this card, you will see its "driver": what is the version number and the date?

6 - what is your resolution? Which resolution is specified as "recommended"?

         ( settings --> system --> display )

7 - are you using only one monitor, or several?  If several, please, explain.

8 - have you "checked for updates" in Windows Update?

9 - how would you describe the problem you have?

    Happy New Year!

    Did not work for me.

Once the driver (v 8.870.100.9001) for my Radeon HD 2400 PRO is installed (automatically by Windows 10) , at the next restart I get a VIDEO DXGKRNL FATAL ERROR

The only solution, is to recover from a previous restauration point (very long), and reboot with the generic microsoft driver.

Then the HD 2400 PRO is detected again, and the driver installed.

Every thing is working fine, but at next reboot.... same story again!

    1. Rollback to previous, working version of Windows.
    2. Update all display/monitor drivers.
    3. Update Windows to latest version.

Ronald Reagan was wrong.  The most terrifying phrase is "Hi, I'm from Microsoft, and I'm going to install a Windows Update!"
