An update was recently installed and now my AMD Radeon HD 3200 display adapter is not working as it did before. I’ve lost my preferred resolution option and the ability to use multiple monitors, and the adapter type is now reported as Microsoft Basic Display Driver. Any suggestions?

Hi Shirlen,

We are aware of a problem that resulted in an incorrect driver update for some AMD Radeon HD 2000, 3000, and 4000 series adapters.

(Updated: 12/18/17)

If you were impacted by the incorrect driver, Windows Update KB4057291 has been released that will install a driver to restore multi-monitor display and resolution control capabilities.  Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install the update to resolve your issue.  You can also go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website to install the update.

(With the release of Windows Update KB4057291, it should no longer be necessary to manually delete the improper driver, as was originally recommended below.)

*****

Follow these steps for all versions of Windows 10 to manually delete the 22.19.128.0 driver from the system and recover the recommended driver version (8.970.100.9001):

  1. Start Device Manager. To do this, press and hold (or right-click) the Start Menu icon, and then select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters, right-click the adapter that has the problem driver installed, and then select Properties.
  3. Select the Driver tab and verify driver version is 22.19.128.0.
  4. Select Uninstall Device.
  5. Check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.” This step is important and will prevent the problematic driver from reinstalling in the future.
  6. The system may require a reboot at this point. Reboot if needed, then reopen Device Manager.
  7. Select any device, then click Action -> Scan for hardware changes.
  8. Recheck the driver version.  If it still reports 22.19.128.0, repeat steps 4 to 7 until the recommended driver (8.970.100.9001) is re-installed.  If this resolves your graphics problems, you can stop here.  If a different driver version is installed, follow the next step to check for the driver using Windows Update.
  9. Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.

I have the Radeon 3000 Graphics card and this happened to me about 2 weeks ago and I was able to roll back the driver and it worked.  Today Microsoft installed the Win 10 V 1709 update and it did it again with no roll back option.  I found this thread and it worked on the 4 try which was done a little different from the post.  The time that it worked, I uninstalled the drivers without opening properties.  In Device Manager, if you right click on the device, you get a menu that allows you to uninstall the device.  Once you click on it, you get the same popup that allows you to delete the software with a check box.  Once I scanned for hardware changes, the graphics card came up as an unknown display adapter with no properties.  As soon as I tried to open the properties, the new driver installed and when the screen came back looking normal, it showed up properly in the Device Manager.  Thanks for all the posts.  If you are still having problems, try it without opening properties.  Although it could have been coincidental.

Why does this driver still exist?

It took me a long time to figure out the problem. I was told by tech support that I needed a new computer! They told me my Dell Studio 9000 was at "end of life." This was all wrong. I ordered a new desktop and returned it.

Is microsoft in the business of attacking people's computers now?

I already fixed this on my own, but I'll go through the suggested steps to make sure this driver does not come back.

I removed my Windows Update software from my computers, out of self defence. I never heard of such a ridiculous problem before, and I've been using computers since punch cards. The "end of life" comment was way out of line!

On Saturday morning my Lenovo Laptop B50-30 was operating normally.

MS updated Windows 10 on Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning could not connect to a second monitor (TV)

While watching our sports coverage that was good on Saturday 9th it was blurred and not flowing on Sunday10th December 2017 (on the smaller laptop screen).

When the Driver for the Graphics was checked this message was present:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

The Driver provider:  Intel HD Graphics

    Driver date - 17/08/2015

    Version      -  10.18.10.4276

Advice is sought on how to rectify the problems.

Thanking you in anticipation of your reply.

    Kind regards form Ted
