Display problems on some AMD Radeon video cards after installing an update

An update was recently installed and now my AMD Radeon HD 3200 display adapter is not working as it did before. I’ve lost my preferred resolution option and the ability to use multiple monitors, and the adapter type is now reported as Microsoft Basic Display Driver. Any suggestions?

Hi Shirlen,

We are aware of a problem that resulted in an incorrect driver update for some AMD Radeon HD 2000, 3000, and 4000 series adapters.

(Updated: 12/18/17)

If you were impacted by the incorrect driver, Windows Update KB4057291 has been released that will install a driver to restore multi-monitor display and resolution control capabilities.  Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install the update to resolve your issue.  You can also go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website to install the update.

(With the release of Windows Update KB4057291, it should no longer be necessary to manually delete the improper driver, as was originally recommended below.)

*****

Follow these steps for all versions of Windows 10 to manually delete the 22.19.128.0 driver from the system and recover the recommended driver version (8.970.100.9001):

  1. Start Device Manager. To do this, press and hold (or right-click) the Start Menu icon, and then select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters, right-click the adapter that has the problem driver installed, and then select Properties.
  3. Select the Driver tab and verify driver version is 22.19.128.0.
  4. Select Uninstall Device.
  5. Check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.” This step is important and will prevent the problematic driver from reinstalling in the future.
  6. The system may require a reboot at this point. Reboot if needed, then reopen Device Manager.
  7. Select any device, then click Action -> Scan for hardware changes.
  8. Recheck the driver version.  If it still reports 22.19.128.0, repeat steps 4 to 7 until the recommended driver (8.970.100.9001) is re-installed.  If this resolves your graphics problems, you can stop here.  If a different driver version is installed, follow the next step to check for the driver using Windows Update.
  9. Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.

If you have further questions, feel free to reply to this thread.

Update KB4057291 has not been released to solve "crash" problems (See

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4057291/multi-monitor-display-and-display-resolution-not-working-for-amd ).

It is supposed to solve display and resolution problems. Many users say this problem has been solved by  this patch. For some users, it is not clear if problem is completely solved or not.

But, if you get "blue screens", it is certainly due to an other reason...

Thank you! I had somebody else ask me the same question. I'll keep digging around. Thank you.

The blue screens started with the same windows update as the display issues other people had. And this being a micro server it's as though I can just pop in a new GPU.

Wow that sucks. I don't have anything for you, but what other people have suggested on this thread. Microsoft seems aware of it and they did post a fix, but that sounds like it didn't solve your issue. I am sure you have already tried updating to Windows 1709 (the latest build) and that you have already installed the latest drivers from AMD.

Those would be my two suggestions.  You seem very tech savvy, so my suggestions are pretty basic. Sorry I don't have more to give you. If I do, I'll post it.

When I follow the directions I get two options:

"Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for X64 Based Systems (KB4057291)"

    and

"Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64 Based Systems (KB4057291)"

    Do I use both?

    Thanks.

My best guess would be no if you look under settings, System, then  all away down the left-hand side and look under the ABOUT.

Call down a little bit and it will tell you which OS you are using. 1703 is the Spring Creators update.  1709 is the fall creators update.

In the old days you would always apply one  update then the next, but I had a lot of issues with the Soring creators update, so if it lets you I would just do the 1709 update, Which is the fall creators update

If you’re not running Windows version 1709, then update to that because so far it seems more stable. I ended up rebuilding my laptop in the spring due to the severity of the issues with the spring creators update.

Due to the issues I was having with the spring update I actually went back, to an OS build of 1400 something. That’s how bad the spring update was.

    I hope that helps.
