Multiple device failure (Code 12) after Windows 10 Creators Update

Hi all,

I was given a computer to fix that showed multiple 'This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (Code 12)' errors in the Device Manager. It is a quite old Sony VAIO VGN-N29VN.

I reinstalled Windows from scratch but the problem reappeared after applying the Creators update. As of now, multiple devices show the Code 12 error and are unusable. In some cases, there are multiple errored entries and one good entry for a given device (e.g. Intel 945 integrated GPU). In other cases, there is only one errored device and the device isn't working (e.g. WiFi or wired network adapters.)

The peripherals showing the errors are the following:

  • Mobile Intel 945 GPU
  • Intel 82801G ATA controller
  • Texas Instruments 1394 OHCI controller
  • LAN-Express AS 802.11g PCI-E adapter
  • Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Eth controller
  • HD audio controller
  • various PCI to PCI bridges
  • three Inter 82801G USB controllers

Some of them are usable (as they appear twice or three times in the Device Manager, others are not.) It looks like the update broke something, as this happened twice and I haven't added or removed any internal or external peripherals. What can I do to fix the problem?

Thank you.

Thank you for getting back to us. The device manufacturer has the tools to look for your hardware concern. It would be best if you contact them for further diagnostics and troubleshooting.

If you have any questions or things you'd like to clarify, feel free to ask.

    Regards.

This is a typical pass the buck copout from M/Soft. Instead of passing the buck to the device manufacturer try fixing the problems that Microsoft is creating with it's generic Windows 10 updates (1803). One size does not fit all! I can see a lot of Microsoft users bailing out and moving to Linux.

Fully agree. All these ridiculous updates are not only time consuming but device consuming too.

I'm sure the vast majority of Windows users just want to be able view websites, use their email client and print stuff off. They certainly don't need all these fancy 'feature' updates that MS thinks we need to enhance our lives and it's got to the point where MS are effectively cyberattacking their own machines. It's ludicrous.

Goodness knows what hassle business users are going through.

Looks like a lot of m'shaft customers could be thinking of moving over to Linux.

Some of us are already investigating that option as this disruption directly and negatively impacts productivity .  Also, am very concerned with the possibility of MS moving the OS to a subscription model.  Technically the Windows OS is a good product, but the business side of MS doesn't get that many of their customers buy only what they need with a one time purchase.  This ongoing disruption is an added cost to our business and the uncertainty of a possible ongoing cash expense with a Windows subscription makes WIndows less and less attractive.

    Dear All including Microsoft Agents

I had exactly the same problem with other Vaio model and I solved it

Code 12 has two different issues

The Normal one whereas everybody think it is conflict in resources and accordingly everybody try to reply using Microsoft tools and systematic diagnostic steps, including update drivers

    But,...

Actually I discovered it is a power management issue, in simple way Microsoft starting with windows 7 , 8 , 10 some Build versions have a problem in recognizing the correct power distribution for the devices due to the fact that each laptop motherboard has its own power distribution, due to the different ways of devices related connections and in some cases it might be solved by updating Bios, but mostly not, and in most cases will be either for the LAN/Wireless cards or Graphic cards.

So Microsoft windows read the devices according to connections and repeat (Double) some main chipset devices, and using the resources for the double once, hence the other devices in chain connection will not get the enough power and resources and in some cases will return code 45, and code 12

The most common case in that issue in the motherboards which has PCMCIA due to chain connection, so it will not get enough power to all the devices connected to the PCMCIA card

To solve this problem until Microsoft fix this bug in the software , you have to find the way to redistribute the power to your devices , and the simple way to do so

    1. In the device manager view by connection not by type
    2. Most probably you will find that the device you have the problem with; would be in a chain connection include more than 3 devices connect to one only for example PCMCIA card
    3. Buy external PCMCIA to USB card which have extra USB power cable
    4. Insert the Card , connect to it the USB power cable, and connect the other USB end to other USB in the same laptop; This will redistribute and give extra power to the PCMCIA card needed for the connected chain devices
    5. Restart the laptop , then you will find that Window will read correctly your devices and distribute the resources correctly

Please note that do not remove the cards afterward from the slots as it should be there all the time

I hope that Microsoft now understand the original problem and try to solve it either alone or with Motherboard manufacturers like Intel for example , taking into consideration that they have to update the software drivers for the motherboards including the old models

    Hany
