    Windows Defender - Virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated                     

    I try to use my update system and it wont update well it will look like its going to do so but then quits

    so what do I do?

    I didn't have the password problem but the symptoms with the update were the same i.e. claiming bad or no internet connection which is not the case.  I have a Windows 8.1 laptop beside it which is fine.

    I am guessing that it is a Windows bug and not a virus but I don't know.  I feel that if it was a virus it would have been discovered by now and we would be hearing about a specific virus.

    Microsoft seems to be very silent on this problem.
