Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

Partially Fixed as of June 26, 2018.

  • Please Update to Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165+
  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes.

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

i have an msi ge72mvr ( i7 7700hq , gtx 1070 ), laptop freze during normal use ( such browsing or opening a folder ), i have this problem since march of this year more or less . Like other guys here, i feel like i've just brought 2k€ of pure rubbish , thanks Microsoft / Intel / nVidia / MSI . I didn't expect that a problem like this were never noticed during develop or testing, even because it's hitting a large set of components .

Yeah plugging your laptop to an external monitor will fix the issue, give "TrayPwrD3" a try if you don't want to connect an external monitor... and make TrayPwrD3 run when windows starts.

Well guys I guess I'm done here.. My little brother ended up exchanging his laptop that had a GTX 1060 for my HP OMEN model with an RX 580... I wish everyone good luck, and I really hope Microsoft fixes this issue.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Lastly I've said it before and ill say it again... IF you purchased your laptop recently and are within your 30 day return period and are fed up with this issue, return it and get the HP OMEN 17 with the RX 580 graphics, I know its hard to switch because well its AMD lol, but out of the box you get a product that performs better than a GTX 1060, CHEAPER and not to mention NO freezing issues..

Now, the RX 580 in stock speeds gets 17k in graphics which is already beating a GTX 1060.. Overclocked it jumps to 19K in graphics, which is already blowing the GTX 1060m out of the water and getting close to a GTX 1070m for a cheaper price.

Graphics driver is not approved because I'm on 17.11.4 beta drivers. Temps wile gaming 72c max(NOTE: Memory can be FURTHER overclocked, core clock as well)

I know Ive said this before but making the switch was the smartest move I made.

Thanks for your advice guy, I just returned my 2k€ Gigabyte Aero 15 and i will wait for Asus laptot with AMD CPU/GPU.

MY freezing Problem even occurs when i only want to right click. The menu pop up very slow than it should be . Take around 1-2 sec to pop out

That's a completely different problem that has nothing to do with what we are talking about here. Edit your right-click context menu (you can use Nirsoft's ShellExView for this) and remove the entries for your Intel and Nvidia graphics cards.
