[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

  • Please Update to Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165+
  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes. 

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

    I rolled back to build 1511 build of Windows 10 just to see how much different Windows 10 used to be on a Optimus device and sure enough it is a different experience .  The whole OS no longer stutters all over the place . I blocked all the updates after initial install so i can remain on 1511 till Microsoft fixes these SERIOUS issues.

    I rolled back to build 1511 build of Windows 10 just to see how much different Windows 10 used to be on a Optimus device and sure enough it is a different experience .  The whole OS no longer stutters all over the place . I blocked all the updates after initial install so i can remain on 1511 till Microsoft fixes these SERIOUS issues.

    I've also rolled back to build 1607 and the overall experience is better... Ive tried version 1511 and unfortunately, for me I get a new "Unknown Device" under device manager that I just can't get rid off.

    Have you tried installing windows 8.1? give it a try... zero problems with 8.1.

    There are 2 programs that fixes the issue by putting a super low load on the dedicated graphic card, a load so low that it would pretty much be in "IDLE" and for general PC usage, the intel card will still be used...

    1: An official patch from Gigabyte called "emptyproject11"

    2: An patch created by a user called "TrayPwrD3"

    Both work great, without using too much resources and fixes the issues, have you guys tried them?

    I have tried TrayPwrD3. This program on my laptop consumes only 1-1.5 W more power when idle.

    For example, if I disable Nvidia driver in device manager, laptop consumes >10 watts more power, because without driver there is no GPU power management.

    IMHO, TrayPwrD3 is good workaround, while people are waiting for real fix from Microsoft or Intel.
