[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes. 

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

    Why are you telling me that? Where in my replay have I asked how to check whats using dgpu?

    Now, yes you can see whats using your dgpu but you cant see if its on or off. Exit every app and it will be grey, but if you check optimus state viewer or go to aida and check temperatures you will see that gpu temp is always showing. On windows 8.1, the only windows that ever worked with optimus normally, temperature is not always shown, it cycles from off to show... Thats the normal behavior. This driver just keeps dgpu on all the time because its for laptops with hybrid cards, not optimus. In hybrid laptops you can turn dgpu off when you want, and just keep igpu. With optimus you cant, back in win 8.1 days nvidia driver was turning it on or off when it was needed. On 10, windows is doing it. And as we can all see its doing a damn good job at it..... So in the end its the same if you use this driver or normal driver with some tool that keeps dgpu on all the time (cant remember the name). And again if you keep it on battery suffers, if you keep it disabled battery suffers even more, if you leave how it is you suffer because stupid chrome takes 2 sec to close....

    You can find application that turn on the gpu using "GPU Activity icon".

    Yes, it keeps gpu ON all the time. Lowest speed and voltage, so its in some low power state but ON. It does work but with it I lose 20k mW, with normal driver I lose 14k (when it gets triggered it jupms to 30k for a sec). So if you lets say watch movie on battery stock is better, if you dont use battery or you do something else open/close programs, folders bla bla, this one is better. Everything is so nice, so fluent. 

    The weird thing is that gpu is on, I have never seen that on win 10. It was always idle/on constantly changing.

    p.s That guy/girl is modding drivers for games, something about dx9, boost speed, clock speed, frame drops, wddm2 driver being unstable, and something about how igpu(intel) is being used with dgpu if you dont select vertical stabilization.. my korean is not that good lol
