[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes. 

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

    Thank you AndreasOlan, yep, you're right, the main app start freezes are still there, as annoying as ever!

    The right click freeze was not an issue anymore, so if it's officially fixed by the update that's great, but I had it fixed a while ago by removing some items from the right click menu and with some registry tinkering, I don't recall exactly what I did, but it's documented, even here on this thread. Anyways, it's great that there's an official fix, on a new windows install we won't have to do entry level engineering  work to have a half alright desktop experience.

    The micro freezes when starting browsers (both for firefox and chrome) (that are set to run on the dedicated gpu) are still there though. I'm pretty sure it's happening for some other programs too but I ain't gonna test it any further, I'm sick of it.

    So it's TrayPwrD3 and staying plugged in and ignoring that in 2018 I'm using a laptop that is struggling with things that my 80s hc had no issues with. goddammit..

    My next laptop is gonna have a single video card, I'm not playing around with optimus and switchables. And all the reviewers of the world that knew about it and said nothing, I hope they all go out of business.

    Anyways, it's not the end of the world, but it's annoying.

    Next I'll try the newly released intel driver  - http://members.iinet.net.au/~michaeldd/Intel%20HD%20&%20Iris%20Graphics%20Drivers%20Version%2023.20.16.4973%20WHQL.rar , see if it makes any difference, unless it breaks my laptop - (these y720s have a return from sleep issue with most versions of intel video drivers..).

    Will get back with feedback regarding the intel driver.

    It does fix the right click the latest ipdate from windows. I dont have the beta drivers from intel but the update of windows does fix it . but only the right click.

    Installing March 22, 2018—KB4089848 (OS Build 16299.334) as we speak.  Will report back, see if it makes a difference for me. Reading through the change log, it mentions nothing about fixing right click freezes though.. guess I'll find out soon enough.

    What laptop do you have Chapo1?

    I'm wondering if I should also try the intel beta graphics driver too, though my lenovo y720 is well iffy with intel video drivers, if I install the wrong version and then put the laptop to sleep it gives me random flickery lines instead of the desktop when I re-open the lid..

    So do you maybe have the lenovo legion y720 too? let me know, please.

    Anyways, will get back with feedback see if March 22, 2018—KB4089848 (OS Build 16299.334) fixes anything.

    I must say that with the latest drivers the problem is less annoyting but still very much there.

    I tried your suggestions here and right clicking, opening chrome, opening discord.. it still freezes for like half a second.

    My temporary solution for this:

    Open Nvidia panel > adjust image settings with preview > move that to the system tray using RBTray.
