Windows 10 apps won't open fully on first try - have to close and reopen for them to work

Windows Apps such as the Windows Store, Calculator app, Skype app, and Mail app usually do not open fully on the first try. The app window will show up, but the functions are not available. I will only see the logo of the app in the center of the solid theme color.

However, if I close the window and reopen the app, it will work fine.

Does anyone know how to fix this so that an app will open normally the first time?

(I have attached a picture of the Calculator app to demonstrate the problem.)

any chance you could share your power settings with me ? I tried creating a new plan too but the problem still persists...

p.s. did you have hibernate enabled before? I have a feeling this has something to do with the hibernate option as that is something I remember playing with recently...been facing this problem for the last couple of days. Tia

Thanks for the feedback. My first thought was that maybe an update reverted the settings to the power plans, or something in the system did something to undo the customisation.  However if the problem didnt seem as bad as before, then it could have been another issue.

It could have also been temporary and a fluke that the problem appeared fixed after creating a power plan a second time.  I am running the spring update as an insider and everything is still working fine.

I like to run the following maintenance steps each month.

    1. Open command prompt as administrator.

    TYPE: sfc /scannow

The above will scan and attempt to fix corrupt windows files.

    1. Defragment your hard drive.
    2. In command prompt as an administrator..

    TYPE: chkdsk /r.

A message will ask you if you want to run the operation on next startup, type 'y'.

This last step will take some time and will will not be able to use the PC in the process but will check and attempt to fix and repair bad sectors in the hard drive.

A combination of these things had my laptop running like a brand new machine with no problems since.

Let's keep updated on this issue.

I created a new power plan around the time it was first suggested here and it fixed the problem. But now ~a month later it's started cropping up again. Not as consistently as before - some apps would get stuck, some would briefly hang on the splash screen, others worked fine. But I created a new power plan again and everything seems to be working again. So just a heads up that it might not be a permanent fix.

I think you found the answer.  I did this too by fluke when i noticed my high performance was missing.

I reset the balanced and created a high performance, and again altered my preferred sleep times and actions.

since then, a day and a half its good!

I also ran the battery and windows store troubleshooters as part of the process.

I started to experience this with my week old Surface Book 2.  I resolved this issue today with the help of this thread, but what worked for me was simply restoring the "Balance" power plan back to default settings.  I've let the computer sleep a few times since then and I haven't seen the issue recur.
