windows phone 8.1 facebook messenger "waiting for network error"

This error appeared on my Lumia 1020 and Lumia 630 on the same day. I open the messenger app and it just sits in a "waiting for network" state.

It goes without saying that I haven't changed anything on the phones, and it is a huge coincidence if this happened to two phones at the same time.

Facebook have not helped. Anybody else seen this error and do you have a fix?

I upgraded my phone to WIN 10 and after that, there was avaiable a new version of facebook and messenger for WIN 10 on store and it works perfectly. So people, upgrade your phones then download the W10 versions of apps from store and enjoy your phone 🙂

    As what Viktória Halászyová's answer says, you have to upgrade your phone to W10M to use it. This is because Mark Zuckerberg (or Facebook Inc.) said it officially that they wont support older versions of your phone, including WP 8.1 and older. So, if your phone is running WP 8.1 or older and it's compatible with W10M update, then update it either by using Windows Insider app or just update it. But if your phone is NOT compatible with W10M update (due to missing hardware requirements for W10M update), you can just buy a new phone running W10M or just editing the registry on HKLM (Hive Key Local Machine)\SYSTEM\Platform\TargetingInfo... (find more by google it with this keyword: "How to update to W10M on unsupported Lumias"). But I'd recommend to stick on WP 8.1 and use internet explorer just to visit messenger online (http://m.facebook.com/messages/) since W10M is STILL in development and using W10M as your primary OS is a bad idea because it can brick your phone.     Read what Messenger's message says...

    It says that the version you have is no longer supported and you need to update your phone to the latest one (which I only available on W10M) to use it. I'm sorry but you can still use Messenger on Internet Explorer app and go to:

    Messenger onlinebut if your phone is compatible with W10M, try upgrading it using Windows Insider app...

    Then either get a phone which supports Windows 10 Mobile or another OS which supports Facebok Messenger or access the Facebook site through the browser on the WP8.1 device you have and read/send messages from there.

    This has been explained many times in this thread and at least twice on this very page, so please read before posting the same question that has already been answered.
