windows phone 8.1 facebook messenger "waiting for network error"

This error appeared on my Lumia 1020 and Lumia 630 on the same day. I open the messenger app and it just sits in a "waiting for network" state.

It goes without saying that I haven't changed anything on the phones, and it is a huge coincidence if this happened to two phones at the same time.

Facebook have not helped. Anybody else seen this error and do you have a fix?

I upgraded my phone to WIN 10 and after that, there was avaiable a new version of facebook and messenger for WIN 10 on store and it works perfectly. So people, upgrade your phones then download the W10 versions of apps from store and enjoy your phone 🙂

    I just went into settings in messenger and cleared history and cache and it works

    Can another company make a client for WP8.1?  I realize FB no longer supports their app for 8.1.  But I'm guessing, since companies make a 3rd party app like 6tag (for instagram), someone could make Messengers or some 3rd party app?  Maybe FB blocked all WP8.1 access?
