In Windows Defender settings the options for "check apps and files" are greyed out.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am running Windows 10 Pro X64, Version 1703, OS Build 15063.296

    Hi Hairy,

Windows Defender will be automatically disabled if there's a third party security application installed on your computer. For us to diagnose the issue, we would like to know if you have a third party security app installed on your computer.

We look forward to your response.

As far as I know Version 1703, OS Build 15063.296 is the latest.

If there is a newer version, where can I find it?

To assist you further, we have verified that the OS Build 15063.296 is the latest version for the computer and the OS Build 15063.297 is for mobile. It appears that you have the latest version installed on your computer.

It is possible that there are some corruptions with the Windows system files. For troubleshooting, we advise that you run the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

Let us know the result and if you need further assistance.

    Thank you.
