same issue with me. now after Fall update it says " this setting is managed by your administrator " . What does it mean ? I am only the administrator. Where can we change this setting ? No idea. Microsoft should tell us about it as now at least we got a hint to the issue.
Windows 10 SmartScreen- "check apps and files" options greyed out
In Windows Defender settings the options for "check apps and files" are greyed out.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I am running Windows 10 Pro X64, Version 1703, OS Build 15063.296

2017-10-21T01:20:36+00:00 I also activated the default administrator account but the same problem exists there.
I am under the impression, that MS does not prioritize issues like this since they haven't come up with a solution or acceptable explanation.
As per to day I deactivated Windows Defender completely and bought a license for an other antivirus software which is working fine and might be even better than Windows Defender.
Lost chance MS.

2017-11-03T00:19:08+00:00 Hi Emanuele,
Thanks for the update.
I took another route; I ditched Windows Defender in favour of the free version of Avast.

2017-10-17T10:00:01+00:00 Bump, I have this same issue - never installed any anti-virus software nor had any prior issues. I've kept my system up-to-date, ran SFC and did all troubleshooting steps in this thread to no avail.
If I get told to restart my computer one more time, I will lose my sanity.
"This setting is managed by your administrator", but I am the administrator...
Thanks

2017-05-26T03:09:44+00:00 Hi Hairy,
Thank you for giving us an update. Before we proceed with the next troubleshooting steps, we'd like to collect more information to know how we can deliver the best resolution to your concern. Kindly answer the following:
- Did you install new programs or updates before getting this problem in Windows Defender?
- Were you previously using a different security software on the PC?
If a third-party antivirus program was previously running on the computer, it's possible that it wasn't removed completely. If that is the case, we suggest getting the corresponding uninstaller for the third-party software you were using before. Once all traces of the old program have been removed, see if the options will be available when using Defender.
Keep us updated so we can assist you further if necessary.
Regards.
