Malicious Software Removal Tool in Win10 Home won't run

I am running Windows 10 Home 64bit. I used to run the Malicious Software Removal Tool, but, all of a sudden, it doesn't run any more.

I've downloaded the most up to date version available from the MS website.

I've tried running it as Admin as well.

But, the tool just doesn't run.

Any ideas, please?

It may also be worth noting that one software may not be as good as another.

Whilst we may prefer different things, you can see by the attached image, that MSRT is reporting some infections and Windows Defender found no problems.

So, what should be used or not, I'm not too sure.

I prefer to use all that I can.

That's why I posted here, to see if we could find out why my system was stopping me from running the tool.

And now, all of a sudden, it's working!

By the way, MSRT has only ever found a problem when I've run a full scan.

    Hi Wayne.

Exhaust fan cannot be blocked with dust or anything like that.

The Laptop is only 4 months old.

And as I mentioned, the fan runs normally now.

I definitely take your point about restore points.

It's something I definitely need to do.

And why MRT is working all of a sudden? I don't know.

    I'm stoked for you!

P.S.  As they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." .......and "Leave good enough alone"  .....sage advice.

    Well, here's some news.

My son just tried to run MRT on his PC.

It's a completely different system, using Windows 10 Pro, and not Home, like I am.

His system has just told him that: This app has been blocked by the System Administrator.

So, Windows is clearly a very strange OS.

    RikDatta,

A lot of information to respond to.  Glad we are back to square one!

    1. I don't use mrt in the run box much....but I know it's there if I choose to use it.  I realize the mrt is not working for you currently, and that your computer does not recognize you as Administrator.  This is what we are trying to solve.

    2.  I don't use a third party anti-virus.....Windows Defender Security Center is enough for me.....but let's not get into that right now.

    1. I use Malwarebytes Free 2.2xxx, MB anti-exploit free, MB anti-ransomware Beta Free, and SpywareBlaster Free.  Periodically, I run AdwareRemover from MB and JunkwareRemoval tool from MB all free.

    4.  Exhaust fans running excessively can indicate that you need to blow the dust out of your laptop....might be overheating.  'Google' blow out dust from your lap top....for YouTube videos showing how.

    5.  I understand you are fond of MRST and we will try to get it back for you.  It has something to do with your computer not recognizing you as the Administrator.

    6.  Restore points need to be considered.  After each Windows Update, a restore point is created automatically.  You can restore to an earlier point in time (if you have good restore points and not a lot of partitions on your HDD) ......you would lose June's Updates but they could be reinstalled....not a problem.  But do you have good restore points that you could revert you, before you started experiencing you Administrator difficulties.

Perhaps you have had enough for one day?  Need a rest?  I'm glad we're back to square one.

    Regards,

    Wayne
