Linx 1020 tablet will not work after Windows Update

Yesterday evening I updated my Linx 1020 tablet via Windows Update.  Three updates were downloaded and installed, which I have listed below. (N.B. for the benefit of Microsoft Support my Link 1020 came pre-installed with Windows 10 and is still under manufacturer's warranty)

1) Update for Windows Defender

2) Cumulative Update for Windows 10

3) Insyde Firmware update  (this required a restart)

After Windows downloaded and installed the updates I was required to restart so I opted to update and reboot.  My Linx 1020 shut down normally and the Linx logo display as it started to reboot.  However, after this point the screen remained black and no matter what I tried I could not start my tablet.  The orange power light also does not display when on mains power.  Prior to shut down my Linx 1020 was 97% charged and on mains power.

Since yesterday I have tried repeatedly to boot my Linx 1020 to no avail.  To all intents and purposes my Linx 1020 is dead and it is my belief that one or more of the Windows updates is responsible for this rather than a fault with my Linx 1020.  The most probable culprit is the Insyde Firmware update as this required the restart.

I have read on the LinxTablet.co.uk forum that other Linx tablet owners have experienced a similar issue after performing a Windows Update.

I am waiting for a reply from Exertis (Linx support) regarding this issue but as the evidence clearly points towards an issue with Windows Update I would be grateful for a response from Microsoft Support, setting out how Microsoft intends to help Linx owners resolve this issue.

To reiterate: my Linx 1020 tablet is dead and cannot boot due to a fault with Windows Update!!

Interesting.  Surely if the 1020 is still powering up with a faulty display then it would feel warm after a while if left powered up?

Both of the tablets I had that developed this fault remained cool to touch over a 24 hour period before I took them back to Argos.

I did try booting mine with a bootable USB stick that I created for my laptop.  I knew the USB would probably not install the mirror image I created for my laptop but I was hoping it would still bring up a boot menu of some sort.  I am afraid nothing happened.

I really wish somebody would provide an official update so we know what the problem is/was and when it is safe to install updates and upgrades.  My new 1020 is running Version 1511 which is a pre-Anniversary Update version of Windows 10.

I know this doesn't say much but I belive the device does power up but the display isn't working. I plugged in an external HD and pressed the power button and the power light on the drive came on. If I press and hold the power button the power light goes off.

I next tried plugging my 1020 into a TV using a mini HDMI lead, but sadly there was no display.

My guess is that if I had a bootable USB stick with the correct drivers on it would boot - but I've no way of trying that.

Maybe one of the wizz kids on here could try..

    Hi Guys,

I hear ya...this whole situation is maddening and beyond belief!

I may now have yet another brand new Linx 1020 tablet but to keep it that way I simply cannot risk logging on to the internet.  This was evident earlier this evening when I launched Windows Defender and did a definitions update, which took a matter of second but in that time Windows Update had tried to download and install an update.  Fortunately this failed as I swiftly disconnected my Wifi connection.

Exertis were slow off the mark to recognise and respond to the issue that has affected our tablets, however, we should bear in mind that it is in fact a Microsoft issue that has caused our tablets to stop working.

It is not my place to defend Exertis but I genuinely believe they are now doing their best to resolve the issue.  The difficulty Exertis has is reaching out to Linx 1020 owners prior to these harmful Windows Updates being downloaded an installed.  For far too many of us our first contact with Exertis (Linx Support) is after our tablets have been disabled when it is sadly too late.  Likewise people have tried to raise awareness on this forum and the Linx forum, but again the message is reaching Linx 1020 owners who have already been affected.

Microsoft on the other hand does have the means to communicate with Windows 10 users, it does all the time through these automatic Windows Updates.  Since ultimately Microsoft is responsible for what is downloaded via Windows Updates surely swift action from them could have prevented some of the damage that has been caused?

Why is it that days after this issue was raised Linx 1020's continue to be rendered unusable and how will we know when it is finally safe to go online without the risk of a Windows Update wrecking our tablets?

It seems to me rather telling that 48 hours after this question was raised on this forum there is still no official response from Microsoft.

    I guess watch this space.

    Kind Regards,

    Marc

    Hi Guys,

I had a very helpful and constructive phone call from Linx Support earlier today.

Obviously Linx are aware of the issues we have been experiencing and confirmed to me that it is the Microsoft Update that is the cause.  Also at present it is thought that this issue only affects Linx 1020 tablets.

The advice from Linx Support is to set how updates are delivered to metered connections until such time as a Microsoft fix is confirmed.

Argos have again kindly exchanged my tablet for a new Linx 1020 and this time I am taking no chances.

Unfortunately for Linx 1020 owners who have already been affected by the Microsoft Update issue the only option is to take it back to the retailer for an exchange or refund.

    Kind Regards,

    Marc
