Xbox One Wireless controller keeps disconnecting

Hello.

I recently bought a Xbox One Wireless controller with the PC wireless adapter.

The problem is... after I logon into Windows 10 the controller connects fine ONE TIME, then, after turning it off and then turning it on again, the controller connects (light stay still) for about 1 or 2 seconds and then the controller turns off again, I even can use it in those 1 or 2 seconds, showing that it successfully connected, but then it disconnects. The problem is only solved after I logoff and login again into Windows (don't need to do a full reboot).

My wired Xbox 360 controller works like a charm. Why do the next gen controller of Microsoft doesn't work well with a system developed by the same company? When I google it, it's problems all around. And judging by the behavior, it's a driver problem, not hardware, cause if it was a defective unit a simple logoff-login wouldn't fix it (and lots of other people wouldn't have similar problems).

    I hit this problem today, I don't see this in any of the tips, but i suppose it could be hidden in all the questions.

     On a hunch i figured this could be the most likely thing turning off the adapter are the power-management settings. It seems i am right in my case, after doing this the adapter seems to stay on.

    A good thing to check if you run into this: Please go into your Device Manager\Network Adapter\Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows\Power Management (tab). Un-check all the power management features (namely in my case Allow Computer to run off the device to save power). Note this could impact the life of your adapter since it will run more, but it seems quite useless in a state that when you are gaming it disconnects to save power.

    Note to Microsoft\Xbox: given you manufacture the controller, and the operating system it might be a good idea to investigate this issue so that you don't drive customers way :) Pun intended.

    Except Xbox 360 wireless controller adapter will reinstall itself almost immediately.

    Hey people! Just passing by to say after some time the problem completelly vanished for me. I'm right now on Windows 10 ver 1803 and the controller works without a glitch.

    One thing that gives a headache trully is Steam. It has those options in Big Picture that captures the input of the controller even when your're not playing anything, like controlling the mouse and volume... If it's your case, then just head to Big Picture mode and then click on that gear and uncheck the Xbox Configuration Support.

    But, to say the truth, I think MS heard our plea and managed to fix something within the latest Windows 10 updates.

    I have the same problem. The controller connects after reboot, then about 10 seconds or so it disconnects, and won't connect again until next reboot. It was an intermittent problem for a long time. Switching from USB2 to USB3 port fixed it for me, but after a few months the problem came back. I'm not sure what software changes may have triggered it. Things I tried so far:

    • Shut off Steam
    • Shut off oculus home and services
    • Uninstall xbox 360 wireless adapter drivers
    • Disable "allow the computer to turn off this device..."
    • Update controller firmware using xbox accessories app
    • Update and disable overlays in geforce experience
    • Replace batteries

    Nothing helped. It's kind of unbelievable how finicky this is. Maybe this is why they ditched proprietary wireless solution and went with Bluetooth in the latest hardware revision.
