why has vista stopped automatic updates?

KEEPING SILVERLIGHT AND MSRT UP-TO-DATE ON THE VISTA O/S

I know that Microsoft is no longer supporting Vista SP2 machines.  I have been following information on this forum as to how to keep Office 2007 up to date, despite that fact.  

Now, I have two questions:

a.  I  have Silverlight installed and the Windows Updater is no longer delivering updates for it.  Should I be manually installing new releases?  For example, there is a new version in the June 13 patch Tuesday summary.   In other words, are these newer releases happening because of some security issue which a new release will fix in Vista SP2?

b  Should I be downloading and manually executing each post-April monthly Malicious Smart Removal Tool (MSRT)?  In other words, even though the Windows Updater is no longer providing this monthly tool, will newer releases of it do the job they are supposed to do, were Microsoft still supporting Vista SP2?

Suggest two things - See if System Requirements state which OS it applies to and if none listed, give it a try. Even if Vista is not listed among others, the does not apply message should appear if not compatible. MSRT may still work with Windows XP. I always create Restore Points before experimenting.

EDIT - I just tried reinstalling KB4012598 and was told it does not apply to my system - because I already have it.

Did it actually say you already had it?  Or did it just say it didn't apply?  I am curious about this, because when I have tried in the past to manually install an Office 2007 Word viewer, I got the message that it didn't apply.  And the later KB files in the supercedence chain have never installed either when the Windows Updater installed the monthly updates.  So, I have always assumed that it didn't apply (and not that I already had it).  In fact, I think that I checked Installed Updates for it, but I couldn't find it, either so that also made me think simply that it didn't apply and not that I already had it.

So, if it reported back that you already had it, I'd be interested to know that.

I would think you are right Karen about Updates you already have. You could try reinstalling one to see if it is a revised version? If not, the Installer will let you know it's already there. I haven't looked into why they are listed again. Perhaps they are revised,  prerequisites, or related to the current patches in how hackers can gain access? I have two of the three you note - missing KB975517 and will have to install manually for sure.

This is the first time I've heard of applying Windows Server 2008 patches to Vista - will let you know if I give it a try.
