Vista: The update does not apply to your system

This follows on from the Windows Update problem in Vista and 7 (see here) but seems to be a different problem, so I've moved away from that topic.

I have 32-bit Vista Home Premium (but with a 64-bit processor...don't know why the manufacturer did that), and haven't been able to install any updates since around March 2016. I've followed the instructions on page 1 of the Windows Update thread, and the first update I need to apply is kb3185911. When I try to install, I get the error "The update does not apply to your system". kb3185911 isn't in my list of installed updates, and there don't appear to be any prerequisites for it listed on its page on the MS site. I'm definitely trying to install the x86 (32 bit) version, and not the 64 bit version. Automatic updates are switched off.

To see what would happen, I tried to install some of the subsequent updates referred to on page 1 of the Windows Update thread, but get the same error each time: "The update does not apply to your system".

Any ideas what could be causing this?

    Yes, if you aren't sure of the best way to update your NVIDIA nvstor32.sys driver then ask bwv848 what he'd like you to do in your bleepingcomputer thread Occasional BSOD in Vista.

    If you have any questions or run into difficulty following his instructions just ask him for help instead of cross-posting in this forum - he has far more experience in this area than I do.  In his last post <here> on 08-Mar-2017 he asked you to run some basic hardware diagnostics but you still haven't posted your logs.  If he eliminates your hardware as the cause of your problems and sfc /scannow still won't run on your machine then he will suggest the best way forward.

    Hello GWN,

    I deinstalled Norton using the removal tool that bwv848 linked to on BleepingComputer, and which is the same one you've linked to here, so Norton should be completely gone. Just to be sure, I've searched both the PC and the registry for the file (or a reference to) BHDrvx86.sys and haven't found anything, bar a reference to it in a text file which is part of the stuff I put up on BleepingComputer.

    Shortly after you pointed out I didn't have the most up to date GeForce driver, I did go in to the nVidia Control Panel equivalent and install the latest driver which is, as you say, v365.19. That didn't update nvstor32.sys though.

    However, finally, today I have managed to find a later version of nvstor32.sys. Since I last looked - which was only  a week or so ago - something has changed on the driver downloads page of the nVidia website and things that previously just didn't work (or were broken links) now do work. I now have a nvstor32.sys which is 18 months newer than the one I had previously.

    Having only just downloaded it, I can't yet tell if it's fixed the BSOD problem, and will go back on to BleepingComputer if I get another one. However, I can confirm that, unfortunately, it hasn't fixed the downloads problem, and I still get the "does not apply to your system" error. The update I've been trying to apply is kb3203621 which, as you may recall, is a fairly innocuous IE security update.

    Do you have any other suggestions?

    Regarding the BSOD, the suggestions made on BleepingComputer haven't solved the problem, and I guess it's beginning to look like a hardware error causing these. The caveat here is that one suggestion was to update a storage driver - nvstor32.sys - but I haven't been able to find a more up to date version than the one I already have.

    Sorry, I'm not sure if there's a problem with the e-mail notification system but I was browsing through the forum today and just realized you posted back in this thread a few days ago.  

    I've been following your thread Occasional BSOD in Vista in bleepingcomputer and two of the drivers in the stack trace for your BSODs were the NVIDIA driver nvstor32.sys and your Norton BASH (Behavior Analysis and System Heuristics) driver BHDrvx86.sys.  After you uninstalled Norton from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and re-booted did you run the **Norton Removal Tool** as bwv848 suggested to ensure you wiped any orphaned files and registry entries left behind by the uninstall wizard?  You only said you "deinstalled" Norton.

    In post # 10 of that thread bwv848 stated "Your NVIDIA drivers are still being mentioned in the "raw stac.k".Did you really update them?" and you replied "I couldn't find a more recent version of nvstor32, sodeinstalled and reinstalled the same version" .

    If you go back to my 31-Jan-2017 post <here> in this thread your NVIDIA drivers were one of the red flags I raised about your Speccy profile (http://speccy.piriform.com/results/Av0os0jP0zjidReGZrUoCqp):  "You appear to have several outdated hardware drivers.  For example, the driver for yourGeForce GT610 graphics card is listed as v10.18.13.5850 (a.k.a v358.50, released in April 2012) but according to http://www.geforce.com/drivers, the latest available driver for 32-bit Vista SP2 isv365.19 from May 2016."

    Did you open your NVIDIA Control Panel (probably something similar to Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | NVIDIA Control Panel | Help | Updates) to check your current driver version and see if Check for Updates... can find a newer driver?
