Windows Update Hangs

As of today 12 April 2016 Window 7 SP1 hangs in searching for updates.  Unlike other postings in 2015, their is no Orchestrator service in services.msc.  Prior to today Windows update was working fine.  Why is this happening?  Is there any other way to get these updates.  I have restarted the OS to no benefit.

    OKAY...cross fingers and toes. Going on 20/70 installing.

    After four daze that was silly but when you are getting a 2.8 GHz P4 with hyperthreading, well over 700 GB total HDD space and it starts Windows 7 Pro about as fast as my Pentium G620 (looked) with only 2 GB PC2 6400 @ 533MHz (vs. 2.60 dual core and 4 GB RAM) and it can hold my entire music and limited video stash and then some...it was worth the fuss of transferring the 465 GB (500) from a dead computer.

    Another happy mutt computer rescued.

    PS I'm not going to call anything the answer though because I've done so darned many things I could just credit elfin magic ;-ppp

    Windows Update has been checking for updates for over 15 hours.  I have switched sleep mode and hibernation to never to turn on and the display to remain on too.  I am plugged into power from my home and connected to the internet via a cable to my cable internet.

    I have not used this computer in 4 years and so expect there are a lot of updates needed/recommended.  How long should I give it and at what point should I contact you again if it has not completed the check?

    I am getting the same thing since April 12th as well when I try to download updates. 

    It's only on Windows 7 machines though, as I have another that runs Windows 8.1 and that one

    checks, downloaded and installed new updates fine on April 13th.

    In order to stop the CPU from running at 25% all day long, I located Windows Update Service

    (in task manager on the Services tab....press the services button and scroll down to "Windows Update"

    and I first stopped it from running and then disabled it)  machine went back to 1-5% CPU like normal when not running any applications.

    I hope they fix it soon because I don't like to have this feature disabled.

    I have to re-enable it once a day to update MSE virus/malware definitions and then re-disable it to save my CPU processor from running 25% all day long.

    What is the point to your reading this thread if you are not going to follow the recommendations?? 

    Stop the WU.  Download and install the appropriate KB3145739, restart and then start WU again.
