Windows Update Hangs

WORKS FOR ME TOO!

I have a 32bit netbook that has been searching for updates for nearly 24 hours without result.  I stopped WU, restarted, then updated with a manually downloaded KB3145739, restarted.  WU found the updates in 26 minutes.

That is a big WOW!

NOTE:  There are both 32 and 64 bit versions of this KB.

I look after 150 client computers.  I will be trying this on many others in the near future and will report back.

My machine said I had that update installed under installed updates, so don't know what the deal was, but I installed it again, which means I must've removed it or something.

Anyway, just took a whole 7 minutes to check for updates and a total of 17 minutes to check, download, install and reboot!!

OMG  this did the trick.. I needed the 32 bit version installed easily, found the updates in less than 10 min. did the download/install .... Thank you so much..

Hello BalintT, thank you for your advice! It worked for me and finally have this update installed within 5 mins. I've checked for updates again and finally got them.

Thank you also Joel_CS and all those who have come up with this good idea to get this month's updates. I already look forward to next month :D

SOLVED:

Windows 7 SP1 64

Extremely frustrated all day yesterday trying every solution posted on the Internet. Then this morning I found this comment on Softpedia's website and it absolutely works (very easy - but why should we have to do this?):

To resolve this issue: first install KB3145739 manually. Go to Microsoft website to download and then install.

Next you should restart and finally you can check for updates in manual mode.

It takes between 5 or 10 minutes.

P.S. I joined the Microsoft community today specifically to post this solution. Hopefully it will help some people avoid hours or days of frustration or drastic, complicated but unnecessary troubleshooting steps.

My guess as to why you should do this has to do with VIDEO DRIVERS.

In several cases the users were reporting the WU failing to work in a timely fashion AFTER REVERTING FROM 10 TO 7. In my case, and I suspect others as well either the HDD was placed in a different machine (board failure?) or had not been used in a longer period of time (could also be an incorrect Windows Update Agent version)...but I suspect video driver issues.

I haven't resolved my video multimedia controller yet and I suspect that when I DO, 3145739 will resolve better. It's in the list of uninstalled updates.

On the other hand...I've had a horrible time of it seemingly tossing out existing updates and after I had it to a handful it went back up to around 70 needed updates.

Since I saved a good copy of 7 Professional and got it activated fair and square I'm not giving up but I'm sure that thousands just give up and think it's a corrupted OS and needs to be reinstalled, they've given up and decided that solves everything.

Obviously, for those with this problem AFTER A REINSTALLATION, it's bound to bewilder them to the point where they swear they will take up Apple like on of their kids, a relative or friend has been constantly telling them to do.

I get bewildered too but thankfully I'm stupid and stubborn and bound to get to the bottom like Popeye vs. Bluto.

After waiting 2 hours for updates which never came yesterday, I gave up.

I went to Microsoft site , downloaded & installed KB3145739, restarted computer, checked for updates and within 3 minutes had the current list of updates which were installed 4 minutes later.

You have saved many frustrated PC users from many hours of trying useless fixes!

I tried at least 5 different useless fixes yesterday ,trying to get Windows 7 updates to work---all failed.

Sure am happy to have found your excellent fix!
