Windows Update Hangs

SOLVED:

Windows 7 SP1 64

Extremely frustrated all day yesterday trying every solution posted on the Internet. Then this morning I found this comment on Softpedia's website and it absolutely works (very easy - but why should we have to do this?):

To resolve this issue: first install KB3145739 manually. Go to Microsoft website to download and then install.

Next you should restart and finally you can check for updates in manual mode.

It takes between 5 or 10 minutes.

P.S. I joined the Microsoft community today specifically to post this solution. Hopefully it will help some people avoid hours or days of frustration or drastic, complicated but unnecessary troubleshooting steps.

My guess as to why you should do this has to do with VIDEO DRIVERS.

In several cases the users were reporting the WU failing to work in a timely fashion AFTER REVERTING FROM 10 TO 7. In my case, and I suspect others as well either the HDD was placed in a different machine (board failure?) or had not been used in a longer period of time (could also be an incorrect Windows Update Agent version)...but I suspect video driver issues.

I haven't resolved my video multimedia controller yet and I suspect that when I DO, 3145739 will resolve better. It's in the list of uninstalled updates.

On the other hand...I've had a horrible time of it seemingly tossing out existing updates and after I had it to a handful it went back up to around 70 needed updates.

Since I saved a good copy of 7 Professional and got it activated fair and square I'm not giving up but I'm sure that thousands just give up and think it's a corrupted OS and needs to be reinstalled, they've given up and decided that solves everything.

Obviously, for those with this problem AFTER A REINSTALLATION, it's bound to bewilder them to the point where they swear they will take up Apple like on of their kids, a relative or friend has been constantly telling them to do.

I get bewildered too but thankfully I'm stupid and stubborn and bound to get to the bottom like Popeye vs. Bluto.

thanks  Joel_CS it worked . the last 2 days wu will spend 3 hours searching for update until i turn is off now it found them in 8 minuts

hope next month wont be a problem

Next you should restart and finally you can check for updates in manual mode.

Just wanted to close the loop here on how we've dealt with this problem with the handful of (unmanaged) Windows 7 systems we're still using. We couldn't get any work done on those PCs because the wuauserv services pegged the CPU at 100% so we took the following steps:

1. Open Windows Update, click Change Settings, select Never Check For Updates, click OK.
2. Restart the computer and log on.
3. CPU usage is now normal so user can get work done on the computer.
4. Then at end of workday Open Windows Update, click Change Settings, select Check For Updates But Let Me Choose Whether To Download And Install Them, click OK.
5. Leave the computer running overnight.
6. Next morning we found the New Updates Are Available icon in the notification area of the taskbar on the computer, and the CPU usage on the computer was normal.

We typically don't touch the New Updates Are Available icon for several days so we can follow the news to see whether there are any reports of any of the new round of updates causing problems for users. Once we're satisfied that the new round of updates are benign, we initiate download and install on these unmanaged Win7 PCs.
