As of today 12 April 2016 Window 7 SP1 hangs in searching for updates. Unlike other postings in 2015, their is no Orchestrator service in services.msc. Prior to today Windows update was working fine. Why is this happening? Is there any other way to get these updates. I have restarted the OS to no benefit.

Windows Update has been checking for updates for over 15 hours. I have switched sleep mode and hibernation to never to turn on and the display to remain on too. I am plugged into power from my home and connected to the internet via a cable to my cable internet.
I have not used this computer in 4 years and so expect there are a lot of updates needed/recommended. How long should I give it and at what point should I contact you again if it has not completed the check?

OKAY...cross fingers and toes. Going on 20/70 installing.
After four daze that was silly but when you are getting a 2.8 GHz P4 with hyperthreading, well over 700 GB total HDD space and it starts Windows 7 Pro about as fast as my Pentium G620 (looked) with only 2 GB PC2 6400 @ 533MHz (vs. 2.60 dual core and 4 GB RAM) and it can hold my entire music and limited video stash and then some...it was worth the fuss of transferring the 465 GB (500) from a dead computer.
Another happy mutt computer rescued.

We'll see...it says I already have 3145739 installed and I have 70 updates, basically no 'odometer' if it is downloading.
I used this formula except I used command line to delete the recommended updates for convenience. I also downloaded and installed KB3145739. The two together worked a charm.the command looks like
wusa /uninstall /kb:xxxxxxx.
This lets the command line search for the updates, and it doesn't overlook any of them. Don't forget the colon after kb.
